Tan Kang Ming, Joshua |
Singaporean violinist, Joshua Tan Kangming, started learning the violin at the age of six. By age seven, he was playing in the PA String Orchestra and performed in Penang, Malaysia. In Singapore, his teachers include Alexander Souptel, Kong Zhao Hui and Kam Kee Yong. In 1993 and 1996, Tan was chosen to represent Singapore at the ASEAN Youth Music Festival in Brunei and Thailand. He served as Associate Concertmaster for the ASEAN Youth Orchestra on both occasions. In addition, he represented Singapore in the Asian Youth Orchestra in 1996 and 1997. In 1997, Tan performed at the Government House in Hong Kong for Governor Chris Patten as 1st violinist for the Asian Youth Orchestra String Quartet. He also appeared as soloist with the SAF Chamber Ensemble in several performances. In 1997, Tan was awarded a SSO/MOE scholarship to pursue his undergraduate studies at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, under the tutelage of esteemed violinist Oleh Krysa. He also studied conducting under Bradley Lubman and Christopher Seamen. Other teachers and masterclasses attended include those of Ilya Kaler, Almita Vamos,Victor Danchenko and Nelli Shkolnikova. While at Eastman, Tan was part of the Eastman Virtuosi's performance at Alice Tully Hall, NY. He was also selected to perform twice at the Kilbourn Chamber Music Honors Recital in a string quartet and piano trio, and to represent the Eastman Philharmonic at the Heidelberg Festival in Germany. In May 2001, Tan graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Applied Music (High Distinction).
