Leila Josefowicz is as famous for being the face of Chanel's Allure perfume as for being a violin virtuoso. In this all-Beethoven programme, she takes on the sunny and effervescent Violin Concerto, a work which Beethoven wrote for a violinist friend’s benefit concert. And though the Symphony No. 7 was written when Beethoven’s deafness was far advanced, the work shows none of the distress he must have felt. Instead it is so full of exuberant, dance-like themes that early audiences were confused by the work’s sheer high spirits.
