SYNOPSIS
The musicians of the SSO present Franz Schubert's chamber masterpiece: the string quartet ‘Death and the Maiden', so named because of the movement containing variations on Schubert's song of the same name, remains one of the pillars of the chamber music repertoire. Based on the songs of the humpback whale, Crumb's Vox Balaenae ("Voice of the Whale") was inspired by a submarine tape recording of the huge mammals singing.
