TROMBONE
 |
Originally known as 'sackbut' - derived from 'sacqueboute' which means 'pull-push' in French, the trombone is the only brass instrument which uses the slide. It has a cylindrical tubing and a cup mouthpiece.
Trombones come in several different sizes and they are not transposing instruments. The orchestra usually has two tenor and one bass trombone. They usually play either in unison or in 3 part harmony. |
SOUND PRODUCTION
By pushing the slide of the trombone in and out, the player can get 7 different lengths of tube. Each length has its own series of notes which the player gets with his lips. As there are no notches to show the player the positions of the slide, like the violinist, the trombonist uses his ear as his guide.
RANGE
It is usually played in bass clef, but the tenor clef is used sometimes for higher notes to avoid ledger lines.
