Originating from Asia, it is a large bronze disc hung vertically on a stand. The rim is bent over so that the edge does not vibrate. The gongs come in several sizes, the largest of which is called the tam tam.
Played softly, the sound can be soothing. But when the gong is hit with great force, it can sound like crashing thunder. The drumstick, or beater, is usually covered with chamois, a very soft material, but other drumsticks can be used for special effects.
