SOUND PRODUCTION

The string instruments produce sound mainly through vibration. This is done by drawing the bow across the strings. You can also produce sound by plucking the strings with your fingers.

The strings are made of either steel or gut (covered by a fine aluminium wire). The bow is a wooden stick with a layer of horsehair tightly stretched along one side over the two ends of the stick.

The length, thickness and tension of the strings affect the pitch. Shorter, thinner and tighter strings produce higher notes while longer, thicker and looser strings produce lower notes. To change the pitch of the notes, the string player must alter the length of the strings by moving his fingers along the fingerboard.

As there are no markings on the fingerboards or strings to indicate finger positions for notes, the player has to judge by his sense of hearing for specific tuning.
