ASSISTANT ORCHESTRA LIBRARIAN

The Assistant Orchestra Librarian plays one of the key roles in the Orchestra Library, managing the procurement, preparation, and maintenance of music materials – both printed sheet music (hard copies) and digital files – required by the various musical ensembles of the Singapore Symphony Group (SSG). This role also involves maintaining an up-to-date database of all musical works performed or planned for performance by SSG and ensuring that relevant information about these works is accurately documented and readily accessible.

REPORTS TO: Orchestra Librarian (Acting Head)
SUPERVISES: NIL

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

This includes but not limited to the following:

  • Track and take delivery of incoming library materials, check their condition and completeness. Verify editions and arrangements with the team to ensure accuracy.
  • Preparation of the materials, including but not limited to proof-reading, editing, transposition and marking of materials.
  • Ensure that the materials meet acceptable performance standards – including manuscript binding and legibility, adequate and compatible rehearsal markings and bar numbers, and smooth page turns.
  • Provide music materials for Musicians’ use with sufficient lead time before the first rehearsals, including scores for Conductors, Instructors, and external AV vendors.
  • Manage the collection of musical works in the Library by cataloging and filing them properly, including updating the Central Planning System (Artsvision).
  • Perform rehearsal and concert duties, ensuring the correct set up and striking of music materials.
  • Assist musicians with requests related to the preparation of music materials.
  • Work with the Choral Department and SNYO/SNYS to ensure timely delivery of required materials for their performances.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum diploma holder with 1 year of work experience. Applicants with more relevant years of experience may be considered for a higher position at a suitable remuneration
  • Knowledge of music theory and an interest in classical music
  • An eye for accuracy and attention to details
  • Strong planning and organizational skills
  • Flexibility to work nights and weekends when needed
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in computer software, e.g. Microsoft Office suite
  • Proficiency in Sibelius or other music notation software is an advantage
  • A team player with the ability to work well with diverse personalities
