Pioneering violist Nadia Sirota and composer Nico Muhly both belong to the trailblazing Icelandic record collective, Bedroom Community - “a lightning rod at the juncture where the ambition of classical music meets the aesthetics of indie music." (Pitchfork). Muhly’s Viola Concerto (2014), written for and dedicated to Nadia, is a spellbinding work whose roots began in their student days at The Juilliard. The Manhattan connection continues through another alumnus, the venerated Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara (1928-2016), who wrote the mesmerising Manhattan Trilogy for the school’s centenary.
For violists? Yes, but not just. Violin and even cello fans could potentially find Muhly's concerto interesting.
