The Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) celebrated its 40th anniversary on March 30 at The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore with a benefit gala that raised $1.16 million. Mr Heng Swee Keat, Minister of Finance, graced the event as guest of honour. Guests were treated to outstanding performances by the SSO, which was joined by London-based violinist Charlie Siem and Singaporean jazz singer Alemay Fernandez. Butterfield Singapore was the presenting sponsor this year, proceeds from the gala will go towards the support of the national orchestra which presents about 100 performances each year, benefiting the public and giving SSO the opportunity to bring classic music to all Singaporeans. The arts charity relies on private donations and government funding that also goes towards the running of the Singapore National Youth Orchestra and the Singapore Symphony Choruses, music competitions, workshops and festivals.
