“Can you imagine your life without music?” It was with this potent statement that Odile Benjamin, chairlady of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra's (SSO) Ladies League, started her speech, to highlight that music is the one "unifying language that transcends all nations and races"—from the alarm clock that buzzes in the morning to the music on the radio as we drive to work. It was with this buoyant sentiment that the SSO feted its annual gala dinner at The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore, which was attended by the avid culture vultures in society. Over a Fiesta Latina! themed evening, supporters of SSO enjoyed a line-up of performances by European operatic star bass-baritone Zoltan Nagy belting out tunes such Quizas, Quizas, Quizas and Cielito Lindo, as well as Korean mezzo-soprano Seia Lee with Besame Mucho.
