When the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) opened its 40th anniversary season with Familiar Favourites: Pictures at an Exhibition in July, everyone in the family—from its long-time patrons and supporters to its three choirs—turned up at the Esplanade Concert Hall. The evening’s all-Russian programme, under the baton of music director Lan Shui, not only featured Mussorgsky’s perennial favourite, Pictures at an Exhibition, it also showcased the voices of the Singapore Symphony Chorus, Singapore Symphony Youth Choir and Singapore Symphony Children’s Choir performing Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances alongside SSO. On top of celebrating yet another milestone, the 2018/2019 season will be Lan Shui’s last after being at the helm since 1997. His farewell concert will be the SSO 40th Anniversary Concert in January next year.
