NEWS RELEASE
Singapore

This season of giving, the Singapore Symphony Group (SSG) launches its 2019 Year-end Appeal with not one, but two special fundraising campaigns and activities, in addition to its general annual appeal. The Group manages the flagship Singapore Symphony Orchestra as well as affiliated performing groups like the Singapore National Youth Orchestra.

The Annual Appeal starts in the last week of November 2019, while the SSO Christmas Fundraising Concert will take place on 13 December 2019 (Friday) at The Esplanade Concert Hall.

Donate Towards Young Symphony Explorers

The SSG year-end Appeal is an annual fundraising initiative — coinciding with Singapore’s Giving Week (1–7 December 2019). This year, as part of the overall appeal, there is a special campaign to focus on the SSO Young Symphony Explorers (YSE), an initiative to enable children in all communities to have the chance to enjoy a concert in a concert hall.

Each year, the SSG organises 150 concert and activities that include free concerts in schools and parks and Victoria Concert Hall. For its ticketed concerts, highly discounted concession tickets are available — from as low as $10. Charities may also apply for complimentary tickets to attend performances.

Last year, the YSE initiative benefited 8,000 students and children, through discounted and free tickets. These included students from schools such as Blangah Rise Primary School and North View Secondary School; and children from charities such as Child@St 11, Daughters of Tomorrow, and the Purple Symphony.

“We want to ensure that the price of a ticket is never the reason for a child to miss out on the special experience of watching a live performance in a concert hall,” said Peggy Kek, Director for Development & Partnerships at the SSG. “However, keeping ticket prices low also means we recover only a fraction of our costs from ticket revenue. So we’re reliant on grants and donations to make up the shortfall. A large part of our funding is in the form of matching grants that require us to raise donations from the public. This makes the individual donor doubly important in sustaining the SSO and its performing groups.”

The special Young Symphony Explorers campaign is on now and hosted at https://www.giving.sg/sso/children.

A Special Christmas Concert

The SSO Christmas Concert (13 December) is an additional component to the Annual Appeal, where the SSO has reserved 24 of the choicest seats for special donors. For a minimum donation of $1,000, donors will be invited to watch the concert from a seat in the Esplanade Box and join an exclusive Champagne reception during the concert intermission.

The SSO Christmas Concert is one of the orchestra’s most popular offerings in the year, with tickets snapped up months in advance. The concert will feature the full Singapore Symphony Choruses, and season favourites like The Nutcracker and White Christmas.
