OVER 100 NEW TALENTS TAKE THE STAGE AT SINGAPORE’S 11TH NATIONAL PIANO & VIOLIN COMPETITION

Nine days of intense competition, 115 participants, 21 winners — the 11th edition of the National Piano and Violin Competition ended on a high note, culminating with the Prize Winners’ Concert & Prize Presentation Ceremony held last evening at the Victoria Concert Hall. The Guest-of-Honour was Associate Professor Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, the Senior Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Social and Family Development.

The biennial competition is one Singapore’s foremost talent development platforms that recognises young music aspirants with the highest standards in classical music.

The competition consists of piano and violin solo performances with the following categories: Artist (25 years and below); Senior (21 years and below); Intermediate (15 years and below); Junior (11 years and below). Winners receive trophies, certificates and cash prizes.

Organised by the Singapore Symphony Group for the first time this year*, set competition pieces at the Prize Winners’ Concert included music from local composers Kangyi Zhang and Eric Watson – Postcards from Singapore and Toccata – Eccentric Dance, where participants were accompanied by the NPVC Orchestra.

The winners of the Artist category are Koh Serene (second prize, piano), Jeong Han Sol (third prize, piano), Ronan Lim Ziming (second prize, violin) and Tanaka Yuri (third prize, violin). There were no first prizes awarded in both categories.

Mr Chng Hak-Peng, Chief Executive Officer of the Singapore Symphony Group, said, “Congratulations to all our winners and participants. We’re delighted to see so many new talents take the stage and with such flair. This augurs well for the future of classical music in Singapore, and we hope many will go on to have exciting careers in music.”

Participants performed for a panel of renowned international adjudicators that comprised six music luminaries. The piano adjudicators were Choo Hoey, Dennis Lee and Artur Pizarro, and the violin adjudicators were Ray-Chou Chang, Denis Goldfeld and Lynnette Seah.

Since its launch in 1997, several prominent Singaporean musicians and music groups have come through the National Piano and Violin Competition, such as Singapore’s premier string quartet T’ang Quartet, who were also musicians in the Singapore Symphony Orchestra.
