Come July 7, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra 2017/18 orchestra season opens at the Esplanade Concert Hall with eminent violinist Gil Shaham taking on Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 1, a work of lyricism, fantasy and mischief. Lan Shui begins the concert with Tan Chan Boon’s "Soir, Rêves, Fantaisie" from his Second Symphony and closes with the first of the SSO’s Brahms Symphonies cycle featuring the epic Symphony No. 1 in C minor, a work that the German Romantic master wrote and refined over a period of 21 years.

Joining Gil Shaham on stage on July 8 at the Victoria Concert Hall is his wife, violinist Adele Anthony. Begin your journey on the other side of the world, dancing to the rustic folk tunes of Eastern Europe, and arrive at post-World War I America in the Jazz Age. The acclaimed husband-and-wife duo brings to life the intimate dialogues between two violins, presenting a refreshing repertoire for violin duo including selections from Béla Bartók’s 44 Duos for 2 Violins and an arrangement of jazz favourite "Sweet Georgia Brown". Technical fireworks are abound as they tackle a selection of Wieniawski’s demanding Etudes-Caprices, Op. 18.
