MASATO SUZUKI IN TWO SINGAPORE CONCERTS AS SSO GUEST CONDUCTOR AND ORGANIST

Conductor. Composer. Harpsichordist. Organist. The distinguished and much-admired Japanese conductor Masato Suzuki returns to Singapore to present two programmes curated from the golden age of classical music in Europe.

As Conductor and Orchestrator – “Inspired by Leipzig”

Bach. Schumann. Chopin and Mendelssohn – four different composers all linked to Leipzig, great city of western classical music. In this concert on Friday 6 Sep, Suzuki is joined by Singapore-based Filipino pianist Albert Tiu in two works for piano and orchestra: Schumann’s Introduction and Allegro appassionato, Op. 92 and Chopin’s Variations on "Là ci darem la mano”. The latter refers to the duet sung by Don Giovanni and Zerlina in Mozart's opera Don Giovanni. It was this adaptation that caused Schumann to exclaim in praise of Chopin, “Hats off, gentlemen! A genius!” Albert Tiu, Associate Professor of Piano at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, has been called “an artist of uncommon abilities” by American Record Guide and hailed for “performances where heart and mind unite in a deeply affecting union” (Gramophone).

Mendelssohn’s grand Symphony No. 5, the “Reformation Symphony” concludes this inspired programme, which is also graced by Suzuki's own orchestration of music by J.S. Bach.

As Organist – “Organ, Omakase”

Bach is also on the programme on Sunday 8 Sep, this time on the Klais Organ at the Victoria Concert Hall. Suzuki performs a tantalizing solo concert of organ music, which he has carefully curated by interspersing mains such as toccatas and fugues, with shorter chorale preludes to cleanse the aural palate. Organ, Omakase, will also include pieces by Schumann, Brahms and Liszt.
