MOONRISE & AURORA – A FILM+MUSIC EXPERIENCE
RED BALLOON SERIES CONCERT

Not one but two heavenly conjunctions await audiences this 30 Aug. The moon and the aurora borealis – two astronomical subjects that have provided endless fascination to humanity since time immemorial – will be celebrated in a one-night film+music experience at the Esplanade Concert Hall, on a big screen, with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra.

The programme is hosted by Emmy-nominated astronomer, science educator, experimental photographer and visual artist José Francisco Salgado, whose Science & Symphony films have been presented in more than 350 concerts and lectures in 18 countries.

Moonrise & Aurora will feature the two titular films screened with live music. Moonrise will be accompanied by Ravel’s famous ballet score from Daphnis et Chloé in the first half of the concert, which also marks the recent 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. The second half will feature the music of Canadian composer John Estacio: Solaris, Borealis and Wondrous Light, forming the Aurora Triptych.

The Red Balloon Series is a new concert series launched by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra in January 2019, with programmes designed to overturn traditional perceptions of classical music and orchestral concerts. Moonrise & Aurora is the fourth concert in the series.
