SSO SUBSCRIPTION CONCERT: FAURÉ CANTIQUE ET REQUIEM

Stephen Layton, one of today’s foremost choral conductors, brings a programme of ethereal choral music to the Victoria Concert Hall on 27 & 28 March.

Fauré’s beautiful short piece Cantique de Jean Racine opens the concerts, setting a peaceful tone, and whetting the appetite for the composer’s great Requiem, which brings the evening to a close with a mesmerizing depiction of Paradise.

In between are two exquisite works: Benjamin Britten’s charming Simple Symphony and Estonian composer Arvo Pärt’s tribute to the great British composer, Cantus in memory of Benjamin Britten.

The Singapore Symphony Orchestra is joined by the Singapore Symphony Children’s Choir and the Treble Voices of the Singapore Symphony Youth Choir. Two world-class soloists join the SSO and choirs for Fauré’s Requiem: soprano Jassy Husk and baritone Laurence Williams.

Stephen Layton is one of the most sought-after conductors of his generation, whose ground-breaking approach has had a profound influence on choral music over the last 30 years. Often described as the finest exponent of choral music in the world today, Layton is regularly invited to work with the world’s leading choirs, orchestras and composers. He has two Gramophone Awards and a further ten nominations, five Grammy nominations, the Diapason d’Or de l’Année in France, the Echo Klassik award in Germany, The Compact Award in Spain, and Australia’s Limelight Recording of the Year.
