We begin this season by reflecting on the bicentennial of modern Singapore, which we marked in the previous season with music from the European Age of Discovery. This season, we look at Great Britain and the sea-faring journeys that started and ended there – from the works of European musicians who were inspired by their travels to London and Scotland, to those of British composers in the 19th to early 20th century writing about their travels and the world around them.
VOICE OF A CITY
Our centuries of history give a country many things to reflect on. For us, we look at how the arts – music specifically – is a vital influence in the formation of a city’s cultural soul. In addition to the music of Singapore at our annual National Day Concert, we explore music inspired by such great global cities as Leipzig, Dresden, Rome, and Manhattan.
NATURE & THE UNIVERSE
The urgency of climate change spurs us to know more about nature and our world. The mysteries, profound logic and longing to connect with the greater universe is the aspiration of all great cultures, and few mediums express the indefinable like music does. Nature, space, the celestial, the divine, and even magic – our appreciation of such phenomena is indistinguishable in many ways from our appreciation of music.
