The sparkling Emperor Quartet is one of the most beloved gifts from the Father of the String Quartet, Joseph Haydn, home to the noble “Emperor’s Hymn”. Join the musicians of the SSO as they bring home this popular work to the Victoria Concert Hall, alongside the sonorous majesty of Tchaikovsky’s string sextet, Souvenir de Florence.
As part of the live performance pilots initiated by the National Arts Council, a limited number of seats to this concert will be made available to the public, subject to safe management measures in effect at the venue.

Born in Shanghai, Chen Da Wei began studying the violin at the age of eight. He was a pupil of the great Tan Shu Zhen, professor at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. In his youth he was a prize-winner at the Shanghai Young Musicians Competition and went on to play with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra for eight years. In 1989 he joined the Singapore Symphony Orchestra as a first violinist.

Da Wei Chen (Chen Da Wei)

Born in Kyiv in Ukraine, Nikolai Koval started playing the violin at the age of five and graduated from the National Music Academy of Ukraine (Kyiv Conservatory). He started his career in the Kyiv Chamber Orchestra and performed in many countries in Europe, Asia and America. While in the chamber orchestra, he worked with many of the world’s leading soloists including Gidon Kremer, Natalia Gutman, Alexei Lyubimov and Mischa Maisky. He was also involved in many chamber projects such as with the Ukraine National Philharmonic String Quartet. In 1996 he performed as soloist with Lysenko Chamber Orchestra at the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam and made a recording under the Disky Communications label in Netherlands. Nikolai moved to Germany in 1997, where he played Principal Second Violin with Philharmonia of the Nations until he joined the Singapore Symphony Orchestra in 2002.

Nikolai Koval

Xu Jueyi has performed regularly in China and Singapore as a soloist and chamber musician. In May 2008, she joined the Singapore Symphony Orchestra as a violinist. Jueyi was appointed concertmaster of the Pacific Music Festival Orchestra where she worked with Maestro Riccardo Muti and the concertmaster of Vienna Philharmonic in July 2007, and has been invited back to join their 2008 season. She won 2nd prize in the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory Concerto Competition in 2006.Her experience in international competitions includes participating in the 9th Jean Sibelius Violin Competition in Helsinki, Finland in 2005 and the 51st Niccolò Paganini Violin Competition in Genova, Italy in 2006.
Jueyi started violin practice when she was six, and at the age of eight became a pupil of renowned violin professor, Zhang Shi-xiang. From 1994 to 2003, she studied at the primary and middle schools affiliated to the Shanghai Conservatory of Music with Zheng Qing and Zheng Shi-sheng. From 2004 to 2008, she was a violin major student under full scholarship at Singapore's Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, studying under Qian Zhou, Head of Strings Department and graduating with a Bachelor's Degree of Music (First Class Honours) in Violin Performance.
Jueyi has performed with a number of chamber orchestras and symphony orchestras and attended masterclasses with world-famous performers. In 2002, she performed with the Shanghai Conservatory of Music Youth Symphony Orchestra on a tour to the United States.
Jueyi plays on the 1706 "Ex-Tradolini" Stradivarius from the Rin Collection.

Jueyi Xu (Xu Jueyi)

Marietta Ku was born in Singapore into a musical family. With a singer-pianist mother and four aunts who were piano teachers, the piano was naturally her first childhood toy, before she decided to switch to the violin at the age of nine.
She subsequently studied at the Royal Academy of Music, London, under an SSO-PSC scholarship. A student of violist Roger Tapping, violinist Howard Davis and pianists Aaron Shorr and Antonietta Notariello, she graduated with an MMus, the Diploma of Advanced Studies, and the LRAM for violin, viola and piano.
In the UK, Marietta has worked with the Amadeus, Alberni and Chilingirian Quartets, and has been appointed principal violist at the Edinburgh Music Festival, the Reigate Music Festival and the Lake District Summer Music Festival. She is also the first Singaporean prize-winner at the Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition.
Marietta currently holds the dual post of violinist-cum-violist with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. Co-founder of the chamber group SPITZE, she is an active recitalist and chamber musician. In her free time, she enjoys mountain-climbing and arranging music for string orchestra.

Marietta Ku

Born in Taiwan, Janice Tsai began piano lessons at age five and violin lessons at age nine. At the age of sixteen she was accepted at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music with violin professor Peter Zhang Shi Xiang, and subsequently won scholarships for the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts on both violin and viola studying with Barry Wilde and Jeremy Williams, respectively. Janice was awarded another scholarship to study at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music – University of Sydney, where she was awarded a Masters of Music degree under the guidance of viola pedagogue Winifred Durie.
Throughout her study and beyond, Janice has had the opportunity to work with and participate in masterclasses with some renowned musicians: Ruggiero Ricci, Cho-Liang Lin, Nigel Kennedy, William Percell, Sylvia Rosenberg, Malcolm Bilson, James Dunham, Yo-Yo Ma, Andrew Marriner and Lynn Harrell. Her love for travelling and making music has taken Janice to music festivals across the United Kingdom, Spain, Austria, France, Australia, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Malaysia.
Janice has performed across Europe, Australia and Asia, with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, Hong Kong Academy Symphony Orchestra, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra and the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. In addition, she lectures in Viola at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and regularly collaborates with re: mix Singapore, the Singapore Lyric Opera and has held violin and viola recitals in Shanghai, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Australia.

Janice Tsai

Dandan Wang started violin studies at the age of six. When she was 16, she switched to viola studies with Prof Xi-Di Shen. In 2010, Dandan started her undergraduate studies in the Shanghai Conservatory of Music with scholarship, where she was a student of Prof Nian Liu.
She performed in the Chamber Music Festival hosted by Shanghai Conservatory of Music and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music in 2010. In 2015, she was invited by Oscar and Grammy-awarded Chinese Composer Tan Dun to perform his chamber music pieces in Shanghai and Beijing.
In January 2015, Dandan began her study in San Francisco Conservatory of Music as a graduate student. She was a student of Prof Jay Liu, Associate Principal Viola of San Francisco Symphony. In July 2016, she was admitted to Pacific Music Festival, one of the most famous festivals in the world. She served as the Principal Viola, performing with maestro Valery Gergiev, violinist Leonidas Kavakos, and with musicians from the Berlin Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Metropolitan Opera, National Symphony and San Francisco Symphony. 
After graduating from San Francisco Conservatory, Dandan was a guest violist of the San Francisco Symphony and at the same time, a fellow musician of San Jose Opera.
Dandan has served as a violist tutti in the Singapore Symphony Orchestra since February 2018 and as a coach in the Singapore National Youth Orchestra.

Dandan Wang

Guo Hao is currently the Third Chair of the cello section in the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. His teachers include his brother, Guo Qu, as well as Yü Ming-Qing and renowned cellist Alexander Baillie. He is a graduate from the College of Arts in Bremen, Germany and Central Conservatory in Beijing, China.
Guo Hao has appeared as soloist with the Staatstheater Oldenburg, the Theater Nordhausen/Loh-Orchester Sondershausen and the Braddell Heights Symphony Orchestra. He has performed Kodály's Sonata for Cello Solo in the Marktoberdorf International Music Festival in Germany.
Guo Hao was Principal Cellist with the China Youth Symphony Orchestra, Guest Principal Cellist with the Staatstheater Oldenburg and was a member of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra. He has participated in masterclasses with Anner Bylsma, Wolfgang Boettcher, Boris Pergamenschikow and George Faust.
He plays on the Matteo Goffriller of 1699 from the Rin Collection.

Hao Guo (Guo Hao)

Born in Sichuan, China, Yu Jing started cello lessons at the age of eight under Wu Xuyu, a family friend. At age 10, she was accepted as a young talent student to the Shanghai Conservatory. Her cello professors were Xia Jinglu and Lin Yingrong. Yu Jing later went to Berlin to further her studies and completed her diploma and master’s degree (with distinction) at the Berlin University of the Arts under Markus Nyikos.
Yu Jing has been in the Singapore Symphony Orchestra since 1997 and is currently Associate Principal Cellist. She is also an active chamber music player. Between 2005-2010, she was a faculty member in Nanyang School of Fine Art and a cello tutor for the young talent programme cello teacher. 
In recent years, Yu Jing started writing children’s music stories. With her husband, <a href="https://www.sso.org.sg/about/singapore-symphony-orchestra/the-orchestra/jin-ta">SSO Principal Flute, Jin Ta</a>, she created a WeChat official account “小鲁仔长笛艺术”, in which she regularly shares her stories and illustrations and introduces young musicians.
