Strings of the SSO

Born in Shanghai, Chen Da Wei began studying the violin at the age of eight. He was a pupil of the great Tan Shu Zhen, professor at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. In his youth he was a prize-winner at the Shanghai Young Musicians Competition and went on to play with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra for eight years. In 1989 he joined the Singapore Symphony Orchestra as a first violinist.

Yao Xiao Yun

Born in Kyiv in Ukraine, Nikolai Koval started playing the violin at the age of five and graduated from the National Music Academy of Ukraine (Kyiv Conservatory). He started his career in the Kyiv Chamber Orchestra and performed in many countries in Europe, Asia and America. While in the chamber orchestra, he worked with many of the world’s leading soloists including Gidon Kremer, Natalia Gutman, Alexei Lyubimov and Mischa Maisky. He was also involved in many chamber projects such as with the Ukraine National Philharmonic String Quartet. In 1996 he performed as soloist with Lysenko Chamber Orchestra at the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam and made a recording under the Disky Communications label in Netherlands. Nikolai moved to Germany in 1997, where he played Principal Second Violin with Philharmonia of the Nations until he joined the Singapore Symphony Orchestra in 2002.

Guan Qi began learning composition and the violin from his father at age 9. In 1978, he enrolled in the Yunnan Arts Academy. While at the Academy, Guan Qi won the second prize in the regional qualifiers of the China International Violin Competition. Upon graduation in 1983, he continued teaching violin in the Academy while serving concurrently as the Academy’s orchestra conductor.
In 1985, Guan Qi entered the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and started learning the viola. He was accepted by the eminent Professor Lin Yao Ji as his only viola student. Guan Qi’s other principal teachers included Si Tu Hua Cheng, Sui Ke Qiang, and Wang Zheng Shan. He also participated in masterclasses by Csaba Erdélyi, Bruno Pasquier and Pinchas Zukerman. Guan Qi joined the China Youth Symphony Orchestra in 1986 and was appointed Principal Violist after the youth orchestra's tour to 13 European countries.
Guan Qi joined the Singapore Symphony Orchestra in 1988 before being appointed Principal Violist of the Macau Chamber Orchestra in 1995. He returned to Singapore Symphony Orchestra in 1997 as Associate Principal Violist. Guan Qi has been invited to participate in the world's top Chinese Musicians Festival Orchestra. He has also been guest Principal Violist with the Sydney Opera House Orchestra, Asia Pacific Festival Symphony Orchestra, Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra, Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra, Xiamen Symphony Orchestra and Yunnan "Nie Er"Symphony Orchestra.
Guan Qi has also appeared extensively as a chamber musician throughout the world. In the 1992 Pacific Music Festival, he was featured with the principal musicians from the Vienna Philharmonic in a performance. As a founding member of both the “Jade” Quartet and "Cheng" Quartet, Guan Qi has given numerous Singapore premieres of works, which include the first three string quartets by Béla Bartók. 
As a soloist, Guan Qi has performed with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra and the Macao Chamber Orchestra in works by Mozart, Handel and Bach, appearing with conductors such as Matthias Bamert and Michael Charry.
Guan Qi has been invited to conduct masterclasses in Beijing, Shanghai, Macao, Guangzhou, Kunming and Singapore. He has also been teaching at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music since 2014.

Qi Guan (Guan Qi)

Chan Yoong-Han is currently the Fixed Chair first violinist in the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. A graduate of Rice University and the University of Massachussetts in Amherst, his principal teachers include Chan Yong Shing, Beryl Kimber, Sergiu Luca, Charles Treger, David Cerone, Kurt Sassmannshaus and Dorothy Delay. 
Yoong-Han has performed solo with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Szeged Symphony of Hungary, Singapore Chinese Orchestra, Singapore Youth Orchestra, Orchestra of the Music Makers, SAF Chinese Orchestra and Braddell Heights Symphony in concertos by Dvořák, Lalo, Berg, John Williams, Mozart, Martinů, Lutosławski, Wieniawski and Sibelius, appearing with conductors including Lan Shui, Lim Yau, Erwin Acel, Matthias Bamert, Anthony Inglis, Han Zhong Jie, Darrell Ang and Joshua Tan. He was invited to perform as soloist in the 2003 SSO President’s Young Performers Concert as well as the 1999 President’s Charity Concert. 
As concertmaster he has led the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, the Singapore Festival Orchestra (SFO), The Metropolitan Festival Orchestra (MFO), Orchestra of the Music-Makers (OMM) and The Philharmonic Orchestra (TPO). As part of Singapore’s Golden Jubilee celebrations in 2015, Yoong-Han was concertmaster of the MFO for the Sing50 concert in the National Stadium, as well as concertmaster of the OMM in its performance of Mahler’s Eighth Symphony and Singapore’s premiere of Wagner’s Die Walküre in 2020.
Yoong-Han has participated and performed in the Aspen Music Festival, Singapore Arts Festival, Adelaide Bach Festival, The Singapore Encore (Brussels), Cascade Head Music Festival and SSO Chamber Series amongst others. As a chamber musician he has collaborated and performed with Christian Blackshaw, Cho-Liang Lin, William Bennett, Claude Delangle, Dennis Lee, Chiao-Ying Chang, T’ang Quartet, Borodin Quartet, the Choir of King’s College (Cambridge), the Singapore Dance Theatre, Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble. Yoong-Han is also a violist in the Take5 Piano Quintet Series since 2007. 
In Singapore Yoong-Han is the recipient of the 2000 Shell-NAC Arts Scholarship and the 2004 NAC Young Artist Award. He is also a member of the Board of re:SOUND Collective. Yoong-Han has taught in the University of Massachusetts and Amherst College, and has been teaching in the School of the Arts Singapore since 2008. Besides making music, Yoong-Han enjoys sharing life with his wife and two children.

Yoong-Han Chan (Chan Yoong-Han)

Zhang Si Jing started her violin studies in Shanghai at a tender age of 5 before she moved to Japan. After graduating from the Tokyo National University of Music and Arts, she furthered her violin studies at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) in the UK, where she excelled in her studies and won several prizes, including the prestigious Paganini Prize and the Dianne Bolton Prize. She was also a proud recipient of Norman George Violin Scholarship and Haden Freeman Bursary. During her solo studies, she performed 12 caprices from Paganini’s 24 caprices and Saint-Saëns/Ysaÿe: Caprice d'après l'étude en forme de valse in a recital named “Caprices Night” and performed Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 1 with RNCM Orchestra.
Zhang has participated in festivals such as the Pacific Music Festival, the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, and has performed with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Halle Orchestra, Manchester Camerata, Opera North Orchestra, Russian National Orchestra and Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. She has toured with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and has performed at the BBC Proms.
In 2007 Zhang won a place with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) while pursuing a Postgraduate Diploma in performance at the RNCM, where she graduated with Distinction. She is grateful to her violin mentors Shouyi Yuan, Noriko Kitagaki, Yoko Seto, Takaya Urakawa, Teiko Maehashi and Yuri Torchinsky.

Si Jing Zhang (Zhang Si Jing)

Gu Bing Jie is currently the Fixed Chair Violist with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. She has toured all over the world performing in the most prestigious concert halls including Berlin’s Philharmonie Hall, London’s Royal Festival Hall, Munich’s Herkulessaal, Beijing’s National Centre for Performing Arts, Shanghai Oriental Concert Hall, and the Esplanade Concert Hall &amp; Victoria Concert Hall in Singapore, where the SSO is based. 
A graduate from the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music under Zhang Manchin, Gu Bing Jie was awarded Second Prize at the YST Concerto Competition. In June 2015, she was invited to join London’s Philharmonia Orchestra for an Asian tour under Russian conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy.
Gu plays on a viola by Luigi Santamaria, Rome 1948, generously on loan from the Rin Collection.

Bing Jie Gu (Gu Bing Jie)

Ng Pei-Sian was Commonwealth Musician of the Year in 2007, winner of the Gold Medal and First Prize at the 55th Royal Over-Seas League Music Competition held in London. He has performed concertos with the major Australian symphony orchestras, Singapore Symphony (SSO), Malaysian Philharmonic, Hong Kong Philharmonic, Estonian National Symphony, Oulu Symphony, Sinfonia ViVA, City of Southampton Orchestra, Philippine Philharmonic and the Orchestra of the Music Makers and performed around the world in venues including Royal Festival Hall, Wigmore Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room, Konzerthaus (Berlin), Lincoln Centre and Carnegie Hall.
Born in Sydney in 1984, he began studies in Adelaide with Barbara Yelland and later with Janis Laurs at the Elder Conservatorium of Music before winning the prestigious Elder Overseas Scholarship to study at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. Ng Pei-Sian completed his studies under Ralph Kirshbaum during which he was awarded the RNCM Gold Medal, the highest prize given by the college.
Ng has had appearances in important music festivals including the Brighton, Edinburgh, Manchester International Cello Festival, Kronberg Academy, Mecklenburg-Vorpormmern Festival and Adelaide International Cello Festival. Ng performed Tan Dun's Crouching Tiger Cello Concerto with The Festival Orchestra under the baton of the Academy Award-winning composer and also performed with Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble, Cho-Liang Lin and Renaud Capuçon.
Recent highlights include a performance of Kalevi Aho’s Double Cello Concerto with his twin brother Ng Pei-Jee and the SSO and also the Asian premiere of John Tavener’s Flood of Beauty with the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory Orchestra under Jason Lai as part of Tapestry, A Sacred Music Festival. Recently, Pei Sian played alongside Yo-Yo Ma and the SSO performing the fresh and exciting double cello concerto Violoncelles Vibrez! by Giovanni Sollima.
Pei Sian is currently Principal Cellist of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and a faculty member at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, Singapore. He performs on a 1764 Giovanni Antonio Marchi cello, Bologna.

Pei-Sian Ng (Ng Pei-Sian)

Born in Shanghai, Yang Zheng Yi started learning the violin at the age of four, and switched to the double bass when he was nine. He spent six years in the Middle School of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music under Cao Jian and was promptly offered a scholarship from ABRSM to study at the Royal College of Music in London under Neil Tarlton and Enno Senft. 
Before joining the SSO in July 2006, Zheng Yi worked with Philharmonia Orchestra (London), Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, Hallé Orchestra (Manchester), London Symphony Orchestra, and was invited to join the international tours of the orchestras of UBS Verbier Music Festival, Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival and Pacific Music Festival. 
He is currently also an Academic Associate at the Republic Polytechnic in Singapore. Aside from playing music, Zheng Yi also enjoys making models of ships and tanks something he picked up when he was six years old.
