Russian-British violinist Alina Ibragimova joins SSO musicians in an all-Russian programme across three Russian greats in their characteristic musical modes. The sweet yearnings of Tchaikovsky’s lyricism give way to the impish energy of Prokofiev and finally to the dark astringency and twilit enigma of Shostakovich’s Third String Quartet, which he considered one of his best.

Synopsis

Alina Ibragimova

Ye Lin started learning the violin at the age of five. She attended primary and middle schools attached to the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, where she studied with renowned violinists Professor Shi-Xiang Zhang and Fang Lei. Ye Lin made her solo debut with the Shanghai Opera Symphony Orchestra when she was 12.
Ye Lin was a prize winner in the 1998 China National Violin Competition, and in the 9th International Wieniawski Competition for Young Violinists in Lublin, Poland in 2003. A National Arts Council-Conservatory music scholar, Ye Lin graduated from the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, National University of Singapore, where she studied violin performance with Professor Qian Zhou. At the conservatory, she became the first winner of the inaugural Yong Siew Toh Conservatory Concerto Competition in 2004. The following year, she won First Prize in the Violin Open Category of the Singapore National Piano and Violin Competition. In 2006, she was selected to study at the Peabody Institute at John Hopkins University as an exchange student where she studied with Victor Danchenko.
After joining the SSO in 2008, Ye Lin continues to be an active chamber musician. She performs frequently with her string quartet and piano trio at the Esplanade Recital Studio and the Victoria Concert Hall. Ye Lin has collaborated in chamber performances with pianist Albert Tiu, the Stradivari Quartet, and violinists Thomas Zehetmair, Peter Hanson, Alina Ibragimova, and others. Since 2003 she has been the acting concertmaster of the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory Orchestra.

Lin Ye (Ye Lin)

Manchin Zhang is Principal Violist of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. She was formerly the first Asian player and youngest member in the history of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) when she was appointed Assistant Principal Viola by music director Neeme Järvi in 1994. Manchin has worked closely with conductors and soloists such as Claudio Abbado, Lorin Maazel, Simon Rattle, Zubin Metha, Michael Tilson Thomas Isaac Stern Yo-Yo Ma, Pinchas Zukerman Gil Shaham, Midori, and Emanuel Ax. During her tenure at the DSO, she was a resident artist at the Interlochen Center for the Arts a member of the DSO Chamber Music Ensemble and DSO String Quartet, and a participant and performer of the Chamber Music Festival at Blue Lake in Great Michigan area. She also regularly performed with the Detroit Chamber Winds.
Born in Hunan China, Manchin started her violin lessons at the age of five and entered the Shanghai Conservatory of Music at the age of ten. She successfully made her debut public performance at the age of 12, and in 1991, was a finalist in the Primrose International Viola Competition. As a violist of the Young Shanghai String Quartet, she also won the 4th prize in the Portsmouth International String Quartet Competition in 1988, and 3rd prize in the Prague International Competition for String Quartet in 1987. She completed her performance diploma in viola with highest honours at the Shanghai Conservatory, and was later accepted as a full scholarship student to work with Emanuel Vardi at the Manhattan School of Music.
Manchin is Head of Viola Studies at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music. As an active visiting professor, she has coached and conducted masterclasses at major musical institutions in China. A much sought-after chamber musician Manchin has performed regularly in chamber music concerts.

Manchin Zhang

Gu Bing Jie is currently the Fixed Chair Violist with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. She has toured all over the world performing in the most prestigious concert halls including Berlin’s Philharmonie Hall, London’s Royal Festival Hall, Munich’s Herkulessaal, Beijing’s National Centre for Performing Arts, Shanghai Oriental Concert Hall, and the Esplanade Concert Hall &amp; Victoria Concert Hall in Singapore, where the SSO is based. 
A graduate from the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music under Zhang Manchin, Gu Bing Jie was awarded Second Prize at the YST Concerto Competition. In June 2015, she was invited to join London’s Philharmonia Orchestra for an Asian tour under Russian conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy.
Gu plays on a viola by Luigi Santamaria, Rome 1948, generously on loan from the Rin Collection.

Bing Jie Gu (Gu Bing Jie)

Ng Pei-Sian was Commonwealth Musician of the Year in 2007, winner of the Gold Medal and First Prize at the 55th Royal Over-Seas League Music Competition held in London. He has performed concertos with the major Australian symphony orchestras, Singapore Symphony (SSO), Malaysian Philharmonic, Hong Kong Philharmonic, Estonian National Symphony, Oulu Symphony, Sinfonia ViVA, City of Southampton Orchestra, Philippine Philharmonic and the Orchestra of the Music Makers and performed around the world in venues including Royal Festival Hall, Wigmore Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room, Konzerthaus (Berlin), Lincoln Centre and Carnegie Hall.
Born in Sydney in 1984, he began studies in Adelaide with Barbara Yelland and later with Janis Laurs at the Elder Conservatorium of Music before winning the prestigious Elder Overseas Scholarship to study at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. Ng Pei-Sian completed his studies under Ralph Kirshbaum during which he was awarded the RNCM Gold Medal, the highest prize given by the college.
Ng has had appearances in important music festivals including the Brighton, Edinburgh, Manchester International Cello Festival, Kronberg Academy, Mecklenburg-Vorpormmern Festival and Adelaide International Cello Festival. Ng performed Tan Dun's Crouching Tiger Cello Concerto with The Festival Orchestra under the baton of the Academy Award-winning composer and also performed with Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble, Cho-Liang Lin and Renaud Capuçon.
Recent highlights include a performance of Kalevi Aho’s Double Cello Concerto with his twin brother Ng Pei-Jee and the SSO and also the Asian premiere of John Tavener’s Flood of Beauty with the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory Orchestra under Jason Lai as part of Tapestry, A Sacred Music Festival. Recently, Pei Sian played alongside Yo-Yo Ma and the SSO performing the fresh and exciting double cello concerto Violoncelles Vibrez! by Giovanni Sollima.
Pei Sian is currently Principal Cellist of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and a faculty member at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, Singapore. He performs on a 1764 Giovanni Antonio Marchi cello, Bologna.

Pei-Sian Ng (Ng Pei-Sian)

Guennadi Mouzyka was born in Vladikavkaz, Russia. He studied Double-Bass in Moscow with well-known teachers: V.Shulepina, M. Fokin G. Favorsky and Professor E. Kolosov. He started his career as Solo Bassist for the Moscow Region Chamber Orchestra in 1979. 
Upon graduation with Honours from Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatoire in 1982 he worked for renowned Russian orchestras: the USSR Ministry Of Culture State Symphony Orchestra under G. Rozhdestvensky and the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, where he was Sub-Principal Double-Bassist. With these orchestras he performed in many countries in Europe, America and Asia. Guennadi joined the Singapore Symphony Orchestra in 1992.

Guennadi Mouzyka

Pan Yun grew up in a musical family and began piano lessons at the age of 6 with his parents, who were piano professors at Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. He started to learn the oboe at the age of 13 with Professor Zhu Dun, continuing his studies with Professor Bai Yu at the Central Conservatory of Music, China from 1980 to 1984, where he attained his Bachelor’s Degree. 
Pan Yun went on to the Northern Illinois University, USA on a full scholarship to study for his Master’s Degree under Professor Carl Sonic. He joined the Singapore Symphony Orchestra in 1985 as Associate Principal Oboist.

Li Xin entered the middle school affiliated to Shanghai Conservatory of Music for clarinet learning with Professor Gu Peng and later entered the middle school affiliated to the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, study with Professor Tao Chunxiao. Li Xin has won the prizes at the National Clarinet Competition at the age of 16 in Beijing and the "Shanghai Spring" International Music Festival in 2001.
With a full scholarship awarded by Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music at National University of Singapore, Li Xin continued studying with Ma Yue and completed his Bachelor degree of music. In April 2005, Li Xin was among the first group of six Conservatory students selected for Yong Siew Toh Conservatory Fellowship Programme at the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, USA, where he received coaching from Peabody faculty, as well as the clarinettist in Philadelphia Orchestra and the professor at Juilliard school.
In the past years, Li Xin performed often with the conservatory orchestra in China and solo performance at Shanghai Concert Hall. In Singapore, he performed with the Conservatory Orchestra often as principle clarinet and as a member of a Conservatory Wind Quintet. He also played in the Peabody Symphony Orchestra, Singapore Symphony Orchestra, the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra and as Principal clarinet in Macao Orchestra. He often goes to the international music festival as well, like Asian Youth Orchestra, the Canton International Summer Music Academy, where he performed with some renowned soloists and conductors, such as Martha Argerich and Charles Dutoit.
In 2007, Li Xin continued his studies in Europe, where he received lessons with the clainet professor in Geneva, Zurich and Lyon. He was accepted as freelance musician in the Orchestra of Zurich Opera and the Orchestra Musikkollegium Winterthur in Switzerland.

Xin Li (Li Xin)

Gulnara Mashurova was born in Almaty, Kazakhstan. She started piano studies at the age of six and by age nine was chosen to study harp at the Pre Moscow Conservatory with Natalia Sibor. From 1991 to 1993 she studied with Vera Dulova at the Moscow Conservatory. Gulnara received a Bachelor and Master's degree in Harp Performance from the Juilliard School as a Jerome Green full scholarship recipient studying under Nancy Allen, Principal Harpist of the New York Philharmonic. She received her second Master’s in Orchestra Performance with a full scholarship from the Manhattan School of Music studying under Deborah Hoffman, former Principal Harpist of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra.
Gulnara was a regular substitute with the New York Philharmonic both in live performances and recordings and has toured extensively with the Orchestra. She has performed with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, Concertgebouw Orchestra, Sospeso Contemporary Ensemble, Absolute Ensemble, Stamford Symphony, Empire State Opera and Silkroad, the organization founded by Yo-Yo Ma.
Gulnara can be heard on recordings with the New York Philharmonic, Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Silkroad, NHK Japan and the Absolute Ensemble.
She has appeared as a soloist with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, the Flagstaff Symphony and the Thailand Philharmonic. In 2006 and 2007, Gulnara travelled to her native Kazakhstan to promote harp repertoire by performing concertos, recitals and chamber music.
In 1994 she was a finalist in the World International Harp Competition in Wales, Cardiff. She has participated in the Pacific Music Festival, Norfolk Music Festival, Spoleto Festival, USA and Spoleto Festival, Italy.
In 2003, Gulnara joined the Singapore Symphony Orchestra as Principal Harpist and is on the faculty of the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music.
Gulnara performs on a Lyon and Healy Style 23 harp.
Gulnara currently lives in Singapore with her husband and son and is a Swiss Citizen.
