Two composers, two perspectives, one musical experience. Quartets Two by Two pairs two composers born 300 years apart in a programme of parallel musical intentions. The exchange between the music of Joseph “Papa” Haydn (1732-1809) and Chen Zhangyi (b. 1984, also a papa, by the way)) seeks to find resonating musical kinship between these two prolific composers. One the esteemed Father of the String Quartet (and Symphony) who was mentor, friend and teacher to Mozart and Beethoven, famed all over Europe; and the other the prolific Singaporean composer and educator, and a musical inspiration for youth.
This evening, two string quartets formed from musicians of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra present a Made-in-Singapore quartet, Chen Zhangyi’s Give and Take (2023) in dialogue with excerpts from Haydn’s famous quartets, the Emperor, Sunrise, Rider and Seven Last Words. We hope you’ll enjoy the contrast between Haydn’s timeless art and poetic humour with the modern cosmopolitan sensibilities of our kampung heritage and city life.
