Peter Stark appointed Principal Guest Conductor of Singapore’s national youth orchestra

The Singapore National Youth Orchestra (SNYO) has appointed Peter Stark as its Principal Guest Conductor.

A distinguished figure in music training for over four decades, Stark is Professor of Conducting at London’s Royal College of Music and Rehearsal Director of the European Union Youth Orchestra. His career has focused on the training of conductors and youth orchestras and he has taught over five hundred private students. In high demand, his conducting masterclasses have brought him to the China Conservatory Beijing, the Shanghai Conservatory, and the State Conservatory in St Petersburg in the last few years. He has been Principal Conductor of the Hertfordshire County Youth Orchestra since 1994. In 2017 he was appointed Principal Conductor of the Arabian Youth Orchestra.

“I am honoured and thrilled to be joining SNYO as Principal Guest Conductor,” said Stark. “International collaboration through the world of orchestral music provides such a positive message to the world—and working with young talented players helps so much in building the next generation of musicians and friends!”

The SNYO has 180 members from over 60 schools in Singapore, from ages 10 to 22. It is recognised by the Singapore Ministry of Education as a “National Project of Excellence”.

“The SNYO occupies a special place in Singapore’s music community, dedicated to the training and development of young orchestral musicians,” said Chng Hak-Peng, CEO of the Singapore Symphony Group, which manages the SNYO.

“We had the opportunity to have Peter conduct an SNYO concert last December, and the chemistry between him and orchestra members was palpable. We look forward to more exciting performances from our young musicians under his baton,” Chng added.

Also newly appointed to the youth orchestra is incoming Principal Conductor, Singaporean Joshua Tan. Tan has been Associate Conductor of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra since 2011.
