Discover insights to choral music and embark on classical choral training through workshops designed for adults and children

Singapore, 19 August 2021 — For the second year running, Singapore Symphony Chorus (SSC) and Singapore Symphony Children’s Choir (SSCC) will be conducting its three annual events online — The SSCC Experience, The SSC Affair, and the SSCC Auditions. Both budding and experienced choristers can look forward to a series of workshops that are designed to provide practical tips on improving vocal techniques, and to give them the unique opportunity to experience the role of being a chorister in SSC and SSCC.

The SSCC Experience

An enriching workshop to partake during the school holidays, The SSCC Experience features half-day online programmes taking place across two days from 6 to 7 September 2021. The SSCC Experience serves as a foundation to ignite the interest in choral music in children between ages 8 to 12 while giving the children a glimpse of what it is like to be a SSCC chorister.

Taught by SSCC’s very own conductors, budding choristers can learn various choral techniques and singing, basic knowledge in music and movement in songs, and vocal music notation and solfeggio. These young participants will also get the opportunity to take part in a virtual choir presentation which will be shared on Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO)’s Facebook and YouTube channel.

The SSC Affair

The SSC Affair invites novice and experienced choristers to join in comprehensive half-day workshops which will be conducted on 8, 9 and 11 October 2021.

Guided by SSC Choral Director — Eudenice Palaruan, participants will embark on classical choral training and learn first-hand from Mr Palaruan on choral performance tips and vocal techniques, and to undertake choral classics. The workshop presents participants the option to work privately with voice clinicians to hone and polish their solo voice. Those looking to improve their musicianship and score reading can also take part in additional musicianship lessons.

Applying their newfound choral music knowledge and choral training, participants will conclude the workshop by participating in a virtual choir presentation which will be available on SSO’s Facebook and YouTube channel. Participants will also get the opportunity to sit-in for a SSC Open Rehearsal.

SSCC Auditions (Online)

Committed to its mission of enriching the musical and artistic growth of Singapore’s young people, SSCC invites children between ages 8 to 14 to audition to be a member of the choir on 26 September 2021.

Offering in-depth yet structured choral training for its young members, SSCC is dedicated to enabling these young singers reach their musical potential by developing their vocal technique, and music literacy and musicianship.

Extending beyond musical experiences, the robust training and choir performances will imbue in these young singers confidence and self-esteem while facilitating the development of important life skills such as discipline, responsibility and self-expression.
