CHORUS OF THE PLANETS: HARMONIES OF THE UNIVERSE

The Singapore Symphony Orchestra's Principal Guest Conductor, Andrew Litton, returns this November to conduct a concert that promises to be out of this world. On Friday 8 November he'll be blasting off to explore the solar system with a performance of Holst's much-loved The Planets Suite.

The concert – which is sponsored by the SSO's Official Radio Station, Symphony 92.4 – also includes Barber's one-movement Symphony No. 1 and Beethoven's Choral Fantasy for Piano, Chorus and Orchestra.

Beethoven's Choral Fantasy is a pre-cursor to the composer's famous Ninth Symphony and is a poetic tribute to the divine power of music. Joining the orchestra for this epic work are: pianist Tengku Irfan, sopranos Ee Ping and Jessica Chen, mezzo-soprano Rebecca Chellappah, tenors Long Long and Jonathan Tay, and baritone William Lim.

Holst's seven-movement suite The Planets is one of the best-known pieces of music ever written. Each section is inspired by the astrological character of the planets in the solar system: from Mars, the Bringer of War (which inspired John Williams' music for Star Wars) to Neptune, the Mystic
