VCHPRESENTS CHAMBER: ENDLESS SOUND 无限的笙

Renowned sheng virtuoso Wu Wei leads musicians of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra on a journey from East to West and back again in this Sunday afternoon concert on 9 February.

Wu Wei has crafted a programme bringing together Chinese favourites – such as Dragon Dance 金蛇狂舞 by Nie Er 聂耳 and Dance of the Yao People 瑶族舞曲 by Mao Yuan 茅沅 – and well-known Western classical works by J. S. Bach and Vivaldi.

The concert will also feature a work commissioned by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra: Remembering the Old Fishing Village 老渔港的回忆, by Chong Kee Yong.

Wu Wei has performed with leading ensembles from around the world, including the New York, London and Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestras, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble intercontemporain and Ensemble Modern. He’s collaborated with conductors such as Jaap van Zweden, Gustavo Dudamel, Marin Alsop, Susanna Mälkki and Matthias Pintscher.

He has given world premieres of 400 works, 20 concertos for sheng and orchestra by composers including John Cage and Unsuk Chin. He has recorded for Deutsche Grammophon, Sony, Harmonia Mundi and Wergo.

He studied at the Shanghai Music Conservatory and Hanns Eisler Academy in Berlin. His latest recording, Silk Baroque with Holland Baroque, came out last year and was named Editor’s Choice in Gramophone Magazine in October.
