VCHPRESENTS: LOVE AND LONGING; FRENCH CONNECTIONS

The rising star Chinese tenor Long Long will be joining pianist Tengku Irfan for a delightful programme of songs and opera arias on Sunday 10 November: Love and Longing.

The concert, which is part of the SSO's VCHpresents season, features music by Massenet, Fauré, Verdi and Gounod. It's the perfect opportunity to hear this up-and-coming star of the opera world in a chamber music setting.

Long Long is one of the most exciting lyric tenors of his generation. He graduated from the Shanghai Music Academy and the University Opera Research Institute in Beijing. He won the third prize at the Tenor Viñas Competition in Barcelona and at the Moniuszko Vocal Competition in Warsaw as well as the first prize at the International Music Competition Harbin. Since September 2019 he has been a member of the Staatsoper Hannover.

This November we bid farewell to our Co-Concertmaster Lynnette Seah, who will be retiring from the SSO. In January 1979 the SSO presented its inaugural concert, and with it the debut of 21-year-old Lynnette Seah as acting orchestra leader. Over 40 years, Lynnette became the face of the SSO for generations of music lovers in Singapore and a warm constant presence for numerous visiting musicians. She has performed for seven presidents and three prime ministers of Singapore as well as for the late King of Thailand and the Emperor and Empress of Japan.

We'll be celebrating Lynnette's incredible career with the SSO at this 'French Connections' chamber concert at the Victoria Concert Hall on Thursday 14 November. Lynnette will team up with our Principal harpist Gulnara Mashurova and a host of other musicians from the SSO for a programme of works that includes Massenet's Méditation from Thaïs and Fauré's Piano Quartet No.1. French Connections is part of this year's Voilah! France Singapore Festival

Lynnette and Gulnara, two familiar faces of the SSO, come together in this enchanting evening of French musical poetry. Fauré's elegant Piano Quartet shares the atmosphere of perfumed lyricism with Ravel’s well-known miniature harp concerto played in its original chamber form. Massenet’s heavenly Meditation from Thaïs needs no introduction, but be prepared to revel in the evocative and subtle verses from Debussy’s narrative settings from Les Chansons de Bilitis.
