Synopsis
“This is the kind of serious, intelligent and virtuosic music-making that keeps classical music alive.” (The Observer). One of today’s most compelling performers, Kirill Gerstein opens the 33rd Singapore International Piano Festival with Beethoven’s first published piano sonatas. The three Op. 2 sonatas are dedicated to Joseph Haydn, despite Beethoven's earlier declaration that he had not learned anything from his studies with the great master. This recital also includes the two "light sonatas", which were published later as Op. 49 after Beethoven’s brother presented them to the publisher, as well as the "Grand Sonata", Op. 7, one of the longest sonatas in the cycle.
Beethoven 200
The 33rd Singapore International Piano Festival presents Beethoven’s 32 piano sonatas in the 200th anniversary year of his passing, performed by six of the world’s finest pianists. These sonatas encompass the complete spectrum of the human condition, reflecting his poignant struggle with growing deafness and his indefatigable drive to transcend all limits.
