Programme

Poulenc La voix humaine

Francis Poulenc’s tour-de-force, one-woman opera gets a rare outing, directed by Cultural Medallion winner and WILD RICE's Founding Artistic Director Ivan Heng.

The piece may just be one-act long, but the role of Elle is one of the most demanding ever written – perfectly captured here by soprano Jennifer Lien. Alone in her bedroom, Elle clings on to her ex-lover’s every word on the telephone. Flirting, pleading, manipulating and threatening, she does everything she can to keep him on the line on the eve of his wedding. Her heartbreak is at once frightening and universally recognisable.

Poulenc used a text by Jean Cocteau, who said the role of Elle demanded “more than a singer: a tragic actress”. This audacious staged production, with pianist Shane Thio alongside Jennifer Lien, was performed at the Victoria Concert Hall in May 2018 and features multimedia visuals by artist Brian Gothong Tan. When our relationships are as much enabled as they are limited by technology, breaking up is hard to do.

Duration: 45 minutes
Sung in French, with English surtitles

Camp and hysterical, yes – but also painfully and intimately moving. We’ve all been there, haven’t we?
