Synopsis

In 1802, Beethoven penned the Heiligenstadt Testament, a last will addressing his worsening deafness and contemplating his own end, but for the sake of his art, he withheld his intention. Around the same time, he said: “I am not satisfied with my work so far; from now on, I want to take a new path.” This new path was manifested in compositions which challenged and disrupted the status quo of the sonata structure. Hear these revolutionary masterpieces, including two sonatas una quasi fantasia, performed by the celebrated Finnish Beethoven interpreter Paavali Jumppanen, whose recording of these sonatas was described as “a sublime account, as genial as any I have heard” (BBC Music Magazine).

Beethoven 200
The 33rd Singapore International Piano Festival presents Beethoven’s 32 piano sonatas in the 200th anniversary year of his passing, performed by six of the world’s finest pianists. These sonatas encompass the complete spectrum of the human condition, reflecting his poignant struggle with growing deafness and his indefatigable drive to transcend all limits.
