Synopsis
“Son’s combination of exactness, energy and emotion rewarded the closest listening and demands the highest praise.” (The Herald). Acclaimed South Korean pianist Yeol Eum Son performs this recital containing popular nicknames like “Waldstein”, “Appassionata”, and “Les adieux”, in reference to the dedicatee’s name or the sonata’s mood. It was customary for music publishers in the 19th century to assign nicknames to works which were otherwise identified by their nondescript numbers, to make them more marketable. The Op. 81a sonata, however, has a programmatic basis for its nickname, as Beethoven inscribed “Lebewohl” (Farewell) over the opening three-chord motif, a dedication to his patron, the Archduke Rudolph.
Beethoven 200
The 33rd Singapore International Piano Festival presents Beethoven’s 32 piano sonatas in the 200th anniversary year of his passing, performed by six of the world’s finest pianists. These sonatas encompass the complete spectrum of the human condition, reflecting his poignant struggle with growing deafness and his indefatigable drive to transcend all limits.
