Synopsis

Praised by Alfred Brendel as “one of my most impressive and exciting young colleagues", and last pupil of the legendary pianist Ivan Moravec, Czech pianist Jan Bartoš will conclude SIPF 2027 with the late sonatas, beginning with Op. 90 and ending with the sublime Op. 111. By this time, Beethoven’s deafness was complete, further isolating him from society, perhaps resulting in these sonatas which are more intimate and spiritually profound. Structure and fantasy mingle seamlessly, polyphonic devices like fugue and canon frequently interweave into the proceedings, and trills and tremolos all add to the transcendence of Beethoven’s music to the highest echelon.

Beethoven 200
The 33rd Singapore International Piano Festival presents Beethoven’s 32 piano sonatas in the 200th anniversary year of his passing, performed by six of the world’s finest pianists. These sonatas encompass the complete spectrum of the human condition, reflecting his poignant struggle with growing deafness and his indefatigable drive to transcend all limits.
