Joan Perarnau Garriga

Born in Manresa, Catalonia, Joan Perarnau Garriga began playing double bass at age 12. He studied under Thomas Martin at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London before moving to Japan as a founding member and Principal Double Bass of the Hyogo Performing Arts Center Orchestra until 2008.
Joan subsequently performed with the UBS Verbier Festival Orchestra and Lucerne Festival Academy under Pierre Boulez, and freelanced with orchestras across the UK and Spain. He joined the Orquesta Sinfónica de Castilla y León in 2010, and has been with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra since 2013, serving as Double Bass Section Principal from 2017. Since 2019, he has regularly collaborated with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, leading to a full season commitment in 2026/2027.
A long-standing member of the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra since 2009, Joan most recently participated in the inaugural Shenzhen Verbier Festival in early 2026. Outside music, he enjoys playing Baroque violone, reupholstering vintage furniture, and baking.
