Markus Gundermann

Markus Gundermann (b. 1970, Dresden, Germany) began his musical training at an early age. He studied violin at the Special School of Music, followed by the College of Music “Carl Maria von Weber” Dresden under Professor Gudrun Schröter, and later in Lübeck with Professor Zakhar Bron.

He performed widely across Germany and Europe as chamber musician and soloist, collaborated regularly with the Staatsoper and Staatskapelle Dresden. He is a recipient of numerous national and international awards, scholarships, and competition prizes, and has participated in masterclasses with Igor Ozim, Valery Klimov, Saschko Gawriloff, and Ruggero Ricci.

In 1997, he was appointed Concertmaster of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, a position he held for 14 years. During his tenure, he worked with distinguished conductors including Lorin Maazel, Gennadi Rozhdestvensky, Mstislav Rostropovich, Sir Neville Marriner, and Kees Bakels. He also appeared as a soloist in concerts and recordings, and was active in chamber music, recitals, and educational activities across Southeast Asia.

Since 2012, he has been based in Germany and serves as Concertmaster (Second Violins) of the Dresden Philharmonic. In this position he regularly performs on major international tours throughout Europe, Asia, and the Americas, working with distinguished conductors such as the orchestra’s former Chief Conductors Michael Sanderling and Marek Janowski as well as its current Music Director Sir Donald Runnicles.

In addition to his orchestral role, he is active as a chamber musician, guest concertmaster, competition juror, and masterclass instructor. He performs on a modern violin by Sebastian Schneider-Marfels (Germany).
