FAMILIAR FAVOURITES: MENDELSSOHN VIOLIN CONCERTO
The Hebrides, the Violin Concerto, the Scottish Symphony - three of Mendelssohn's finest classics, each embodying his Romantic spirit, inventiveness and vibrant capacity for melody. Spanish-Catalan conductor Josep Pons directs the SSO with our guest soloist, the young American violinist Stefan Jackiw, described by The Strad as "truly sensational, showing a talent and maturity that belie[s] his years".
Stefan Jackiw is one of America’s foremost violinists, captivating audiences on both sides of the Atlantic with his poetry, pure sound, and impeccable technique. Hailed for playing of “uncommon musical substance” that is “striking for its intelligence and sensitivity” (Boston Globe), Jackiw has appeared as soloist with the Boston, Chicago, Cleveland and New Philharmonic Orchestras, winning the support of numerous conductors including Andris Nelsons, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Sir Andrew Davis, Juraj Valčuha, Yuri Temirkanov, Hannu Lintu, Ludovic Morlot, Philippe Herreweghe, Mario Venzago and Hans Graf.
Josep Pons is regarded as the leading Spanish conductor of his generation, and has built strong relationships with the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Orchestre de Paris, Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen and BBC Symphony Orchestra - the latter including several appearances at the BBC Proms. He is also the Music Director of Gran Teatre del Liceu and Honorary Conductor of the Orquesta Nacional de España, having previously served as their Artistic Director for nine years during which he substantially raised their international profile. His discography of over 50 CDs and DVDs are mostly released by harmonia mundi and Deutsche Grammophon.
