Philippe Quint: The Red Violin
PHILIPPE QUINT: THE RED VIOLIN
The now classic 1998 film The Red Violin traces the life of a magnificent, haunted violin in a tale spanning over 300 years. Our storyteller in this concert is the much-lauded Russian-American violinist Philippe Quint, “a fiddle virtuoso whose many awards are fully justified by the brilliance of his playing.” (Chicago Tribune).
Alongside John Corigliano's Oscar-winning music for The Red Violin, the SSO’s Principal Guest Conductor Andrew Litton contrasts Bernstein’s vibrant Candide Overture with the brooding strains and defiant turmoil of Shostakovich’s Tenth Symphony.
Multi-Grammy Award-nominee violinist Philippe Quint has established himself as one of the leading violinists of his generation. Constantly in demand, he regularly appears at venues ranging from the Gewandhaus in Leipzig to Carnegie Hall in New York and at the most prestigious music festivals such as Verbier, Colmar, Hollywood Bowl and Dresden Festspiele.
In addition to his award-winning discography, the celebrated violinist has won acclaim playing with the world’s leading orchestras and conductors including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Seattle Symphony, Detroit Symphony, New Jersey Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra and Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.
Philippe Quint plays the magnificent 1708 'Ruby' Antonio Stradivari violin on loan to him through the generous efforts of The Stradivari Society.
