From January to June, acclaimed international and local musicians including Paul Lewis, Daniel Moult, the Thomas Clausen Trio and Yu Jing will perform a wide repertoire of works by celebrated composers like Schubert, Debussy, Brahms, Janáček, and Beethoven.

Singapore, 3 November 2022 – Concert-goers will have plenty to look forward to in the new year as the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) unveils an exciting line-up of concerts in its VCHpresents series from January to June 2023. From light-hearted recitals offering a fun introduction to classical music to performances that shine the spotlight on celebrated composers like Schubert, Debussy, Brahms and more, the concerts have been specially curated to appeal to both budding and serious classical music lovers.

Some not-to-be-missed performances include VCHpresents Chamber: Time Remembered – Bill Evans in January, VCHpresents Chamber: Schubert’s Piano Sonatas with Paul Lewis in February, VCHpresents Organ: Daniel Moult – Organ Rhythm in March, and VCHpresents Organ: The Composer and the Mouse in June.

January

To kick off the VCHpresents series in the new year, Danish jazz pianist and composer Thomas Clausen and his legendary trio will be presenting VCHpresents Chamber: Time Remembered – Bill Evans on 8 January. This homage to Bill Evans will feature the legendary jazz pianist’s classics as well as Clausen’s compositions such as For Pi, plus pieces from the Trio’s latest release - Edelweiss, Nature Boy, Billy Strayhorn’s Blood Count and more.

February

Come February, celebrate Valentine’s Day with Musicians of the SSO as they come together to stage VCHpresents Chamber: Love Is In The Air on 12 February, featuring works by Robert and Clara Schumann, touted as the most famous couple in the history of Romantic classical music.

On 18 February, the Victoria Concert Hall hosts VCHpresents Chamber: Schubert’s Piano Sonatas with Paul Lewis, where the renowned English pianist will perform an enchanting all-Schubert recital. Don’t miss the opportunity to witness the composer’s delicate, self-assured poetry in music during this one-night only concert.

March

Fans waiting to watch renowned concert organist Daniel Moult live in action can finally do so on 5 March, where he will be in town for VCHpresents Organ: Daniel Moult – Organ Rhythm. For his Singapore debut, audiences will be treated to a selection of iconic pieces by classical greats like Mozart and Mendelssohn, and they will also get to witness footwork virtuosity in Thalben-Ball’s Paganini Variations.

On 15 and 16 March, witness how stories are brought to life with music during VCHpresents Intimate Moments 乐享时光: The Tales of Yu Jing 余菁的音乐童话, featuring three original stories by Yu Jing, Associate Principal Cellist of the SSO, set to music arranged by her husband Jin Ta, Principal Flute of the SSO. Apart from enjoying the music, audiences will also be able to engage in conversations with Yu Jing and host Zhang Heyang from Lianhe Zaobao.

April

On 15 April, Music Director Foo Say Ming, the re: mix Ensemble and organist Koh Jia Hwei will come together to present VCHpresents Organ: Farewell Concerto, featuring a fascinating programme of music contemplating the tragedy and desolation of war. Look forward to works by English composer Herbert Howells and French film composer Georges Delerue – the former is represented by his war-time Psalm Preludes for organ, while the latter is heard in his sorrowful account of the 1992 epic French war masterpiece, Diên Biên Phu.

In the month of May, highly acclaimed Schumann Quartet will be partnering Musicians of the SSO to present two different programmes, showcasing works by Debussy, Brahms, Janáček and Beethoven.

On 10 May, the Schumann Quartet, comprising Mark, Erik and Ken Schumann, and German violist Veit Hertenstein, as well as Musicians of the SSO’s musicianship and technical mastery are on full display in VCHpresents Chamber: Schumann Quartet – Debussy, Janáček & Brahms, as they perform three gems from the chamber string repertoire: Debussy’s scintillating Danses for harp and strings, the evocative musings of Janáček’s Kreutzer Sonata and Brahms’s heartfelt String Sextet.

For their second outing – VCHpresents Chamber: Schumann Quartet – Brahms & Beethoven on 11 May, the Schumann Quartet will once again be joined by Musicians of the SSO including winds, where they will perform special pieces by renowned composers including Brahms’s 1875 Third String Quartet, and Beethoven’s youthfully vibrant Septet in E-flat.

June

The VCHpresents series will wrap up on a high note on 17 June with VCHpresents Organ: The Composer and the Mouse, a performance that is suited for families. A fun introduction to classical music, combining film and original music for organ and piano, the concert is performed live by the Scott Brothers Duo comprising organist Jonathan Scott and pianist and animator Tom Scott.
