Singapore Symphony Orchestra appoints Rodolfo Barráez as Associate Conductor
Barráez will make his first SSO appearance at the President’s Young Performers Concert in late August.
Singapore, 11 August 2022 — The Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) has announced 28-year-old Venezuelan conductor Rodolfo Barráez as its new Associate Conductor after an international search. Barráez succeeds Joshua Tan, who held the position from 2013 to 2021.
A Master’s graduate of Orchestral Conducting at the prestigious Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin, Barráez made his European debut at Philharmonie Berlin in 2019 with the Hauptstadt Sinfonie-Orchester.
Hans Graf, Music Director of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra said, “Rodolfo is a very gifted, accomplished young conductor with great enthusiasm and commitment in nurturing young musicians. We warmly welcome him and look forward to the commencement of his term in this exciting 22/23 season.”
Chng Hak-Peng, Chief Executive Officer of the Singapore Symphony Group said, “We are delighted to welcome Rodolfo to the SSO family. Given his passion for music and how he conveys that to the audience, we know that his music-making will bring joy to both SSO long-time audiences as well as those who are new to classical music.”
A rising star of the conducting world, Barráez has garnered a handful of accolades within the last couple of years, including 2nd prize at the Inaugural 2020 Siemens-Hallé International Conductor Competition in Manchester, leading to immediate invitations with The Hallé. He was also awarded 1st Prize at the 2018 International Conducting Competition of the Orquesta Filarmónica de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (OFUNAM), and named one of Los Angeles Philharmonic 2022-2023 Dudamel Fellows.
“I am thrilled to be joining the Singapore Symphony Orchestra as Associate Conductor, and look forward to collaborating with our musicians to deliver unforgettable concert experiences for the audiences in Singapore,” said Rodolfo Barráez.
In his new role, Barráez will conduct a wide range of projects with the SSO including the upcoming President’s Young Performers Concert, slated for 26 and 27 August 2022, and the SSO Christmas Fundraising Concert on 15 and 16 December 2022.
