The Genteel Horn Of Mr Han
THE GENTEEL HORN OF MR HAN
On Friday 13 March, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra celebrates its wonderful Principal Horn, Han Chang Chou, who is retiring from the orchestra this season. And what better piece to mark the occasion than Mozart's sparkling Horn Concerto No. 2?
This much-loved Mozart work is sandwiched between two works inspired by Molière's 1670 satire, Le Bourgeois gentilhomme. The play tells the story of Monsieur Jourdain, a middle-class man who desperately wants to rise to the aristocracy.
French composer Jean-Baptiste Lully wrote the original music for the play. For this concert in March, Singaporean Darrell Ang will conduct Lully's Overture and Dances written for the premiere in 1670. The concert closes with Richard Strauss's Le Bourgeois gentilhomme, an orchestral suite written between 1911 and 1917, also inspired by Molière's play.
Han Chang Chou joined the Singapore Symphony Orchestra in 1987. He studied horn at the Shanghai Music Conservatory under his father Professor Han Xian Guang, winner of the top prize in the 1957 Concours International d’Execution Musicale de Genève. After graduating from the Shanghai Conservatory in 1979, Han Chang Chou joined the Beijing Central Philharmonic Orchestra as Principal Horn. An experienced orchestral player, he has performed with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Munich Radio Orchestra, the Saarbrücken Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Dortmund Philharmonic.
Born in Singapore, Darrell Ang studied conducting in St Petersburg with Leonid Korchmar and continued at Yale with Shinik Hahm. He became the youngest Associate Conductor of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and also served as Music Director of the Singapore National Youth Orchestra. He took all three top awards at the 50th Besançon International Young Conductors' Competition, leading to the Music Directorship of the Orchestre Symphonique de Bretagne (2012-2015). He has held the role of Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of The Sichuan Orchestra of China since December 2016.

You are cordially invited to savour Mozart’s elegant Horn Concerto No. 2, presented by our Principal Horn, Han Chang Chou in this 80-minute concert without intermission. Accompanying this fine work: the courtly dances and genteel musings of French Baroque master Jean-Baptiste Lully and orchestral dramatist extraordinaire Richard Strauss, each taking their turns casting the wry humour in Molière’s satire on social pipe dreams.
