With Raffles Hotel Singapore being named as the SSO's Official Hotel, Magic Hour is a collaboration between these two iconic institutions, bringing live music performances to the community.

Synopsis

Born in Leicestershire England, David studied at the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music. Prior to joining the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, David spent three years with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra under the baton of Daniel Harding and Claudio Abaddo. He has been honored to work with many of the world’s leading conductors including Gustavo Dudamel, Philipe Herwegge, Tugan Sokhiev, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Marc Minkowski.
David has travelled the world playing in many internationally renowned orchestras under the baton of the premier conductors of our time. These include: the Philharmonia, Lucerne Festival Orchestra, Helsinki Philharmonic, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Welsh National Opera, Orchestra Gran Canaria, Tenerife, and the Beijing Symphony Orchestra.
Part of David’s heritage of brass playing comes from the British-style brass band. He is proud to be the principal cornet of the Desford Colliery Band, an ensemble with a 100-year history and one of UK’s finest exponents of this medium. He can be heard on numerous orchestral and chamber ensemble recordings for Deutche Gramophone, Virgin Classics, BIS, Hyperion and Chandos.

Singaporean horn player Hoang Van Hoc began his studies with David Jolley at the Hartt School of Music, Connecticut, USA and with James Sommerville at the Longy School of Music, Massachusetts, USA where he received his Undergraduate Diploma in 2000 and his Master of Music in 2001. Shortly afterwards, he won a full-time position with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) beginning in 2002.
In 2005 he successfully auditioned for a place at the Hochschule fuer Musik (HfMDK) in Frankfurt, Germany and left the SSO in order to further his studies with Sibylle Mahni, Erich Penzel and Esa Tapani, where he received a Graduate Diploma in 2008. Since then he has worked with various orchestras in Germany, including the Stuttgart Staatstheater, Oper Frankfurt, Wiesbaden Staatstheater and the Suedwestrundfunk (SWR) Sinfonieorchester.
In 2013 Van Hoc began studies in Natural Horn with Ulrich Huebner at the HfMDK where he graduated with a Masters Degree in Historical-Interpretations-Praxis in 2016. During this time, his engagements with historical orchestras include MusicAeterna in Perm, Russia under Teodor Currentzis, Das Neue Orchestra in Cologne, Germany under Christoph Spering as well as the Hamburg Barockorchester. He can be heard on recordings on the Sony label with MusicAeterna - Don Giovanni, and with Compagnia di Punto – Rosetti Symphonies.
In a display of diverse playing styles, Van Hoc has toured with artists such as Deep Purple, David Garrett and Ian Anderson from Jethro Tull. His previous teachers include Dixie de Souza and Jamie Hersch. 2019 marks his return to the SSO.

Van Hoc Hoang (Hoang Van Hoc)

Born in Los Angeles, California, Sam Armstrong began studying the trombone at the age of 12 with Byron Peebles and James Miller of the LA Philharmonic. In 2008, he was accepted to The Juilliard School by Joseph Alessi and was awarded the Jerome L. Greene Fellowship. Later, he attended the Curtis Institute of Music, where he received the Ruth and Morris Williams Jr. Scholarship while studying with Blair Bollinger, Nitzan Haroz, and Matthew Vaughn. Before joining the Singapore Symphony Orchestra in 2016, he served as Co-Principal Trombone of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra and performed as a guest with the LA Philharmonic. 
As a passionate educator, Sam holds the position of Artist Faculty at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, National University of Singapore. He has also conducted masterclasses throughout Asia, including at the Alessi Seminar, Mahidol University, and the Tianjin Juilliard School. Mr. Armstrong is a founding member of Singabones, a trombone ensemble dedicated to nurturing talent of all ages. The mission of this group is to provide a regular gathering where community leaders strive to instill camaraderie and musical excellence. A solo highlight from 2022 was at the Thailand International Trombone Festival, where he played William Goldstein's "Colloquy" with the Million Wind Philharmonic led by Ricardo Mollá Albero.
Sam expresses immense gratitude to his parents, Mike and Joy Armstrong, as well as his godparents, Jim and Debbie Boltinghouse, all of whom are accomplished brass players themselves and have ardently supported him. While away from the concert stage, Sam enjoys studying the Tamil language, cooking, and exploring Singapore's rich culinary offerings with his wife, Maya Vinothini.
