SSO Announces 2024/2025 Season Line-Up and Australian Tour
The new season opens with Beethoven’s triumphant Choral Symphony, followed by an exciting series of concerts featuring world-class artists including Maxim Vengerov, Hélène Grimaud, Steven Isserlis, Daniil Trifonov, Chloe Chua and more.
Singapore, 29 April 2024 – The Singapore Symphony Orchestra’s 2024/2025 season is set to excite, with epic works such as Beethoven’s Ode to Joy, Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony and Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Together with the Singapore Symphony Choruses, the SSO will also perform the thrilling Carmina Burana in a joint concert with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Choruses. The well-received SSO National Day Concert, Concerts for Children, and SSO Pops series and free outdoor performances continue to be staples in the calendar.
Artist Highlights
Classical music lovers can look forward to concerts featuring world-renowned soloists such as violinists Maxim Vengerov, James Ehnes and Yu-Chien Tseng, pianists Hélène Grimaud, Daniil Trifonov and Behzod Abduraimov, cellist Steven Isserlis, erhu player Yiwen Lu and trumpeter Pacho Flores. Vengerov and Grimaud will also be presenting solo performances in not-to-be-missed recitals.
SSO Music Director Hans Graf will conduct nine programmes, including concert hall favourites such as Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony and Mendelssohn’s complete music for A Midsummer Night’s Dream. SSO Associate Conductor Rodolfo Barráez will continue to helm the SSO’s popular community outreach concerts and annual SSO Christmas Concert, which sees the return of Handel’s Messiah to the year-end yuletide season. Acclaimed guest conductors Vasily Petrenko, Mario Venzago, Lawrence Renes and Long Yu will make a welcome return, and former SSO Principal Guest Conductor Okko Kamu will also conduct Sibelius’s Violin Concerto and Second Symphony.
Spotlighting Homegrown Talents and SSO Musicians
The orchestra continues to shine the spotlight on Singapore’s brightest music stars including violinist Chloe Chua, conductor Kahchun Wong, soprano Victoria Songwei Li and mezzo-soprano Jade Tan. Pianists Toby Tan and Adrian Tang will showcase their finesse in Rachmaninoff and Prokofiev at this year’s President’s Young Performers Concert. In addition, audiences can also expect to hear new and established works by composers Koh Cheng Jin, Emily Koh, Lee Jinjun, Kelly Tang and the late Leong Yoon Pin this season. Furthermore, for the first time, winning entries from a Call for Compositions will be premiered at the SSO National Day Concert.
SSO’s very own musicians will also take centre stage in the 2024/25 season. Principal Cellist/The HEAD Foundation Chair Ng Pei-Sian will perform Brahms’s Double Concerto with violinist Chloe Chua, while Principal Horn Austin Larson will play Mozart’s delightful Horn Concerto No. 4, and Principal Clarinet Ma Yue will bring to life Finzi’s Clarinet Concerto. Violinist Chan Yoong-Han will play the solo in John Williams’s moving Schindler’s List for SSO Pops: Classics at the Movies, and violinist Foo Say Ming will perform for a SSO Organ Series concert, while Principal Harp Gulnara Mashurova will feature in two French-themed SSO Chamber Series concerts this October.
SSO Goes on Tour
Other notable highlights of the season include a highly anticipated collaboration between the Singapore and Melbourne Symphony Orchestras and Choruses for the choral-orchestral spectacular – Carmina Burana. The SSO will also be making their Australian debut in February 2025, with stops in Brisbane, Melbourne, and the iconic Sydney Opera House. This is SSO’s first overseas engagement since 2017.
Concerts for Children and Free Performances
In line with the orchestra’s mission to create memorable shared experiences with music, and enrich our diverse communities, the 2024/25 season will also bring back the popular SSO Babies’ Proms and Concerts for Children, as well as free outdoor and community performances at the Singapore Botanic Gardens, Gardens by the Bay and Paya Lebar Methodist Girls’ School (Secondary).
Singapore Symphony Choruses
The Singapore Symphony Choruses family comprises the Singapore Symphony Chorus, Youth Choir and Children’s Choir. Every season, they perform in different combinations suited to the occasion. As the symphonic choirs of the SSO, their voices rise to their greatest heights combined in harmony with a full symphony orchestra. In the 2024/25 season, hear them in three of the grandest works in music history: Beethoven's Ode to Joy - the heart of his Ninth Symphony, Mahler's Resurrection Symphony and the spectacular choral-orchestral extravaganza, Carmina Burana, where they will be joined by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Chorus.
Come the Christmas season, hear the choruses in two joyous concerts: Gloria! - the splendour of music from Baroque to contemporary times celebrating the yuletide season, led by distinguished UK choral conductor Stephen Layton; and the ever-popular SSO Christmas Concert in December 2024. In the latter, the Christmas-time staple, Handel's Messiah makes a welcome return to the Victoria Concert Hall, alongside popular Christmas carols.
Singapore National Youth Orchestra
Besides playing side-by-side with the SSO at this year’s National Day Concert, the Singapore National Youth Orchestra will be conducted for the first time by SSO Music Director Hans Graf in March 2025.

The Singapore and Melbourne Symphony Orchestras and Choruses join forces to present the choral-orchestral spectacular of Carmina Burana, Carl Orff’s grandiloquent 1937 oratorio. The “Songs of Beuren” is based on 13th century songs celebrating all manner of life’s pursuits – from sacred prayers to bawdy tavern songs, reincarnated through a modern orchestra in kaleidoscopic colour and rhythmic vivacity, amplifying its vibrant and earthy humour. It’s a stunning experience that’s absolutely not to be missed, as is the lineup of fanfares, firebirds and flamenco in this exciting collaboration.

Pulcinella was my discovery of the past, the epiphany through which the whole of my late work became possible. The idea of bringing to life the universal comic character from Neapolitan commedia dell'arte tradition in music fascinated Stravinsky. The result was an enchanting collection of ballet numbers filled with nostalgic neoclassical charm and the pungent wit of 20th century modernism. The Renaissance-inspired Fantasia for Strings by Henze and the music of Haydn, the paragon of the Classical era, add to this theme.
Haydn’s Piano Concerto No. 11 is performed only on Friday (11 Oct), and No. 4 only on Saturday (12 Oct).

Peter, the Wolf and Friends is an anthology of three musical tales told through the animateurs and vaudeville-inspired storytellers of Really Inventive Stuff, accompanied by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. Introduce your kids to classical music with the jingles and whistles of the Toy Symphony, Aesop’s timeless tale of The Tortoise and the Hare, as well as Really Inventive Stuff’s signature production of Peter and the Wolf.
Recommended for ages 4 and above. No admission for infants-in-arms. No admission without a ticket. Pre-concert activities will begin an hour before each show.

In typically modest fashion, Brahms described his Piano Concerto No. 2 as “a very small piano concerto with a very small and pretty scherzo.” Right. Meanwhile, with the threat of deadly censure from the Stalinist authorities hanging over his head, Shostakovich outwardly called his Fifth Symphony “a Soviet artist’s reply to just criticism.” The truth of these two masterpieces is monumentally evident otherwise – witness them in the expert hands of critically acclaimed German pianist Gerhard Oppitz and trail-blazing Singaporean conductor Kahchun Wong.

Hear this remarkable piece conducted by Kahchun Wong, Principal Conductor/Artistic Advisor of the UK’s Hallé Orchestra and Chief Conductor of the Japan Philharmonic. Japan’s prominent violinist Akiko Suwanai joins us in this programme with Dvořák’s folk-inspired Violin Concerto.

Watch the phenomenal pianist Behzod Abduraimov spin its 24 ingenious variations of breathless celerity, ravishing twilight and cinematic nostalgia. The Singapore Symphony Chorus and Youth Choir then join Hans Graf in a rendition of Daphnis et Chloé, the symphonie chorégraphique that Ravel called a vast musical fresco faithful to the Greece of his dreams.

What he does with his hands is both technically and musically unbelievable. And then there is his touch — so gifted with tenderness and at the same time he has the demonic element. I have never heard anything like this before,” said none other than the legendary Martha Argerich. Hans Graf leads the SSO with Trifonov as he performs Rachmaninoff’s virtuosic Piano Concerto No. 4, framed by the genteel masquerade of Stravinsky’s ballet music for Le Baiser de la fée and Debussy’s musical impressions of Iberian festivity, the scent of night and the brilliance of springtime.

Founded in 1979, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) is Singapore’s flagship orchestra, touching lives through classical music and providing the heartbeat of the cultural scene. ABOUT THE SINGAPORE SYMPHONY CHORUSES
The Singapore Symphony Choruses is a premier choral body comprising the Singapore Symphony Chorus, Singapore Symphony Youth Choir and Singapore Symphony Children’s Choir.
Since 1980, the Choruses have seen membership from diverse ages, backgrounds and nationalities. Regularly sharing the stage with the SSO, the Choruses record and tour with the orchestra, as well as give their own performances in Singapore and abroad. Through holistic training that nurtures artistic growth and personal development, the Choruses aim to articulate an ecosystem of choral excellence. Repertoire for the respective choruses straddle musical worlds and styles, ranging from orchestral masterpieces to a cappella favourites, and spanning the Renaissance to contemporary 21-st century music. Throughout the pandemic, the Choruses challenged the boundaries of remote collaboration in music making, releasing several productions including a music video "We Will Get There", as well as a one-of-its-kind joint choral performance "Longing", entirely enabled by technology.

ABOUT THE SINGAPORE NATIONAL YOUTH ORCHESTRA
Formally established in 1980, the Singapore National Youth Orchestra (SNYO) has welcomed generations of youths to the life-changing experience of playing orchestra music, performing locally as well as representing Singapore at prestigious concert halls and music festivals overseas. Over the years, the SNYO has performed in concert venues and music festivals across Australia, Austria, Germany, Italy, Japan, Malaysia and the United Kingdom. Today, the orchestra consists of 180 youths aged 10 to 21, from more than 60 schools across Singapore. The SNYO family consists of a main orchestra and a junior orchestra, where they are guided by professional musicians in rehearsals, sectionals and masterclasses. Their programme is accessible to talented youth musicians with selected individual lesson subsidy and travel grants for tours as well as participation in exchange programmes. The SNYO is recognised by the Ministry of Education as a National Project of Excellence, and part of the Singapore Symphony Group.
