SSO announces the return of free live Community Concerts, plus the first online SSO Concert for Children

SSO’s free community concerts are making a long-awaited return this March. The first SSO free concert to take place this year will be on 19 March at 12.30pm and 21 March at 4pm, at Victoria Concert Hall. Both concerts will be conducted by Joshua Tan and will include performances of works by Grieg and Tchaikovsky. Registration for the 150 tickets available for each performance will open on 5 March at 10am.
Later in the year, the SSO’s much-loved Concerts for Children series makes its much-anticipated debut online, on Saturday 29 May, with a programme designed for youngsters. ‘Saturday’s Surprisingly Super-Duper Lesson’ is an adaptation of a book of the same name by Jolene Tan and Isabella Tong, published by Epigram Books.
The online show tells the story of Aish, who’s cooped-up in a classroom doing a maths problem, when something extraordinary happens: her doodles come to life! This specially tailored concert will introduce children to classical music through storytelling, keeping them engaged with narration, illustration, animation and music performed by the SSO. Recommended for children aged 4 and above. Tickets will be available at the early-bird price of $15 from 10 am on 17 March to 10am on 20 March, and $20 thereafter.
March also sees the return of a popular SSO online series for children: Musical Soundbites. Conductor Jessica Gethin returns for a second series of her weekly online video series, following the success of her first series exploring Saint-Saëns’s Carnival of the Animals, which was launched as part of the SSO’s extensive digital season during last year’s Circuit Breaker. This time she’ll be introducing children to Elgar’s Enigma Variations over the course of four weeks. Musical Soundbites: Enigma Variations will be released every Sunday from 14 March at 3pm on the SSO YouTube and Facebook pages and will be free to watch.
The SSO also announces the cancellation of the following community concerts that had been planned as part of the original 2020/21 season:
SSO Lunchtime Concert 18 March | Victoria Concert Hall
SSO In Your Community (Central) 19 March | ITE College Central
Music in the Meadow 20 March | Gardens By the Bay.
