SSO Woodwind Musicians

Born in Sichuan, China, Zhao Tian began his violin lessons with his father when he was three years old.
He was admitted to the Sichuan Conservatory of Music to further his violin studies under Professor Hu Weimin at the age of 8. At the age of 18, he was awarded full scholarship to study at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music at the National University of Singapore, where he studied with Professor Qian Zhou. In 2014, he has been selected as exchange student to the Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University. That same year, he received full scholarship from the Manhattan School of Music to pursue his double Master’s degree (in violin solo &amp; orchestral performance) with former concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic, Glenn Dicterow and world renowned violin professor, Lucie Robert. Prior to joining the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, he has worked with Baltimore Symphony Orchestra since 2016 and performed at the Proms in 2018.
An active chamber musician, Zhao Tian has participated in many music festivals including Aspen Music Festival, Texas Music Festival and those of the Music Academy of the West. He has collaborated in chamber music with many distinguished musicians and groups such as Glenn Dicterow, Gil Shaham, Pinchas Zukerman, Lucie Robert, David Takino, American String Quartet and Emerson String Quartet. Zhao Tian has appeared as soloist with the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Orchestra and Penang Philharmonic, performing concertos by Bruch and Tchaikovsky.
He performs on a 1737 Camillus Camilli violin generously loaned from Mr William Tan.

Tian Zhao (Zhao Tian)

Chan Wei Shing was born into a musical family and started playing the piano at the age of eight and cello at the age of ten. In 1985, he won First Prize in the cello open and chamber music categories of the National Music Competition. 
In 1988, he began studying with Professor Angelika May at the University of Music in Vienna and later with Professor Rudolf Leopold in Graz in Austria. In 1996, he was awarded a Masters in Cello Performance. 
In 2011, Wei Shing and his wife started a opera company - they have since become the company's Music Directors and have conducted many operas including Die Fledermaus, A Midsummer Night's Dream and Dialogues des Carmélites, to name a few.
Wei Shing's passion lies not only in music: he also dives regularly and has a passion for photography and cooking.

Wei Shing Chan (Chan Wei Shing)

Yoko was born in Yokohama, Japan and studied at the Tokyo College of Music. Upon graduation from the college in the summer of 1993, she participated in the Aspen Music Festival in the USA as a scholar.
In 1995 she began to study with Professor Francois Benda at Musik Akademie der Stadt Basel, Switzerland and has performed with Sinfonie Orchester Basel and Radio Sinfonie Orchester Basel as a trainee in 1996-1997. In July 1998, she played a concerto by Gotkovsky as a soloist with the Sinfonie Orchester Basel and graduated the Akademie with a Soloist Diploma.
After Yoko returned to Japan, she participated in many performances including having her solo recitals three times in Tokyo, Yokohama and Fukuoka, and performing with many different orchestras in Tokyo, Osaka, Kanazawa and Fukuoka.
From 2001-2005, she was a member of the Kyushu Symphony Orchestra. Since January 2007, Yoko has been a clarinetist with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO). In 2010 she had recitals in Yokohama and Singapore with her husband Liu Chang, SSO Associate Principal bassoonist.

Zhao Ying Xue is Assistant Principal Bassoon with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and lecturer in Bassoon and Winds at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts.
Ying Xue studied bassoon with Professor Li Lan Song in the middle school to the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing before being selected to study with Professor Marc Engelhard in Saarbrücken, Germany. Ying Xue received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Music Performance from Hochschule Für Musik Saar.
Ying Xue was a member of the International Bachakademie Stuttgart and the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie where she performed numerous concerts throughout Europe.
Before becoming a member of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Ying Xue was contracted with the Staatsorchester Rheinische Philharmonie, Koblenz and the Staatsorchester Stuttgart.
Ying Xue has also been a member of the judicial panel of the inaugural JinBao Bassoon Competition.

Ying Xue Zhao (Zhao Ying Xue)

Prizewinner of the International Trumpet Guild (ITG) Solo Competition in 2013, Lau Wen Rong completed his Master’s Degree with Raymond Mase at The Juilliard School under the Frieda and Harry Aronson Scholarship.
Wen Rong received his Bachelor of Music Degree from the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music of the National University of Singapore, where he was awarded a full merit scholarship. His competition successes include 2nd place at the Pan-Asian soloist competition at Brass Explosion 2012, 2nd place in the prestigious Norman Cooper Chamber Music Competition held in Aberdeen (Brass Polish), and 1st place at the Singapore International Band Festival (Orchestra Collective).
Wen Rong has appeared with the Metropolitan Festival Orchestra, Singapore Lyric Opera Orchestra, Juilliard Orchestra and the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory Orchestra. He has also participated in music festivals such as the Pacific Music Festival (PMF) in Japan and was selected as a Fellow at the Aspen Music Festival in 2015. As an active chamber musician, he has performed with award-winning brass ensemble, Brass Polish (Singapore) and various other brass quintets in Singapore, taking part in outreach activities and bringing the joy of music to the public.
Wen Rong is a recipient of the 2015 RI-Darrell Ang Young Musicians’ Foundation Scholarship, Trailblazer Foundation Study Grant and National Arts Council Capability Development Grant. Wen Rong has studied with Jon Dante, Mark Gould, Joe Burgstaller, William Theis and Tay Jiun Ngiap. Wen Rong is currently on the faculty at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of music and he is a Yamaha Artist.

Kong Zhao Hui began learning the violin at the age of five, with his father Kong Guangtian. At the age of 11, he was admitted to the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and studied with Wang Zhenshan and Sui Keqiang. He also worked with violin masters including Yehudi Menuhin, Isaac Stern and Yfrah Neaman.
In 1984, Kong graduated with distinction from the Central Conservatory of Music, where he stayed on to teach. He went on to become the concertmaster of the Beijing Concert Hall Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra and guest concertmaster of the China Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra. In 1987, Kong was invited to perform in the First International Music Festival of Macao, where he played The Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto to great acclaim. To date, Kong has performed this work in over a hundred well-received concerts. 
As a soloist, Kong has toured Asia, Europe and Australia and has performed with the Central Philharmonic, China National Symphony, China Philharmonic, National Ballet of China Symphony, as well as many other Symphony Orchestras and Chinese Orchestras in China; Singapore Chinese Orchestra, Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, Queensland Youth Orchestra, Macao Orchestra, Macao Chinese Orchestra, Taipei Symphony Orchestra, Taipei Chinese Orchestra, Evergreen Symphony Orchestra, The Presidential Symphony Orchestra of Turkey and the Orchestre Symphonique de Bretagne. 
A passionate and virtuosic violinist, Kong is currently Associate Concertmaster of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and guest concertmaster of the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra. He performs on a J.B. Guadagnini of Milan, c. 1750, donated by the National Arts Council, Singapore, with the support of Far East Organization and Lee Foundation, and a 1750 Nicolò Gagliano, on generous loan from the Rin Collection.

Zhao Hui Kong (Kong Zhao Hui)

A native of Kaohsiung, Taiwan, violinist Cindy Lee started her piano lessons when she was four and had her first public performance at seven. She started violin studies at eight under a special artistic programme founded by local government. While she was a student in Taiwan, Cindy has performed Mozart Piano Concerto No. 21 as a soloist with her school orchestra, as well as the Barber Violin Concerto with the Kaohsiung City Symphony Orchestra.
A graduate of the National Taiwan Normal University and the Eastman School of Music, her principal teachers included Yung-Shin Fang, Zen-Sheng Chen, Shu-Te Lee, Chia-Hong Liao, Oleh Krysa and David Brickman.
As an orchestra musician, Cindy has performed as part of the Asian Youth Orchestra, Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, Spoleto Festival (Italy), Civic Orchestra of Chicago, Kaohsiung City Symphony Orchestra and Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra.
Cindy Lee has been a member of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra since 2004.

Shui Bing studied at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in violin performance. He went on to teach at the Secondary School attached to the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. 
Before joining the Singapore Symphony Orchestra in 1998, Shui Bing was the violist for the Shanghai Youth String Quartet and performed at the First International Chamber Music Competition in Melbourne in 1991. In 1996 he was invited to perform as a soloist with the Shanghai Radio Philharmonic.

Bing Shui (Shui Bing)

Guo Hao is currently the Third Chair of the cello section in the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. His teachers include his brother, Guo Qu, as well as Yü Ming-Qing and renowned cellist Alexander Baillie. He is a graduate from the College of Arts in Bremen, Germany and Central Conservatory in Beijing, China.
Guo Hao has appeared as soloist with the Staatstheater Oldenburg, the Theater Nordhausen/Loh-Orchester Sondershausen and the Braddell Heights Symphony Orchestra. He has performed Kodály's Sonata for Cello Solo in the Marktoberdorf International Music Festival in Germany.
Guo Hao was Principal Cellist with the China Youth Symphony Orchestra, Guest Principal Cellist with the Staatstheater Oldenburg and was a member of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra. He has participated in masterclasses with Anner Bylsma, Wolfgang Boettcher, Boris Pergamenschikow and George Faust.
He plays on the Matteo Goffriller of 1699 from the Rin Collection.

Hao Guo (Guo Hao)

A member of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra since 2004, double bassist Wang Xu is a former member of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra and China National Symphony. Wang Xu started his musical studies at the age of 13, and is a graduate of Boston University, Shanghai Conservatory of Music, and Xi’an Conservatory of Music. Wang Xu holds a Masters degree in music from the Boston University under full scholarship.

Miao Shanshan started learning the flute under Professor Wang Yongxin of the Central Conservatory of Music. In 2000, she won the Third Prize and the Chinese Works Award in the Second National Flute Competition in China. During her studies in Austria, she was awarded her Bachelor’s &amp; Master’s Degrees with honours at the University Mozarteum Salzburg. She has taught flute since 2006 and has been invited to perform solo and in chamber music concerts. In 2010, she won the Salzburg Government Art Foundation Award and performed as part of the Salzburg International Festival Series. In 2011, her thesis “Instrumente im Vergleich der Kulturen, die europaeische Querfloete und die chinesische Bambusfloete” was published by Verlag Dr Mueller in Germany. She joined the Singapore Symphony Orchestra in 2014.

Shanshan Miao (Miao Shanshan)

Pan Yun grew up in a musical family and began piano lessons at the age of 6 with his parents, who were piano professors at Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. He started to learn the oboe at the age of 13 with Professor Zhu Dun, continuing his studies with Professor Bai Yu at the Central Conservatory of Music, China from 1980 to 1984, where he attained his Bachelor’s Degree. 
Pan Yun went on to the Northern Illinois University, USA on a full scholarship to study for his Master’s Degree under Professor Carl Sonic. He joined the Singapore Symphony Orchestra in 1985 as Associate Principal Oboist.

Li Xin entered the middle school affiliated to Shanghai Conservatory of Music for clarinet learning with Professor Gu Peng and later entered the middle school affiliated to the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, study with Professor Tao Chunxiao. Li Xin has won the prizes at the National Clarinet Competition at the age of 16 in Beijing and the "Shanghai Spring" International Music Festival in 2001.
With a full scholarship awarded by Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music at National University of Singapore, Li Xin continued studying with Ma Yue and completed his Bachelor degree of music. In April 2005, Li Xin was among the first group of six Conservatory students selected for Yong Siew Toh Conservatory Fellowship Programme at the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, USA, where he received coaching from Peabody faculty, as well as the clarinettist in Philadelphia Orchestra and the professor at Juilliard school.
In the past years, Li Xin performed often with the conservatory orchestra in China and solo performance at Shanghai Concert Hall. In Singapore, he performed with the Conservatory Orchestra often as principle clarinet and as a member of a Conservatory Wind Quintet. He also played in the Peabody Symphony Orchestra, Singapore Symphony Orchestra, the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra and as Principal clarinet in Macao Orchestra. He often goes to the international music festival as well, like Asian Youth Orchestra, the Canton International Summer Music Academy, where he performed with some renowned soloists and conductors, such as Martha Argerich and Charles Dutoit.
In 2007, Li Xin continued his studies in Europe, where he received lessons with the clainet professor in Geneva, Zurich and Lyon. He was accepted as freelance musician in the Orchestra of Zurich Opera and the Orchestra Musikkollegium Winterthur in Switzerland.

Gao Jian joined the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) in 1988. Over his distinguished career he has performed with orchestras in Asia, Europe, America and North Africa, as well as appearing in solo recitals and chamber music concerts. 
Gao Jian has performed as a guest musician with major Asian orchestras including the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, Macau Symphony Orchestra, Hangzhou Philharmonic Orchestra, China Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as China NCPA Orchestra. He is now Associate Principal Horn of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra.

Jian Gao (Gao Jian)

Elaine started music lessons on the piano at the age of six. She took up the oboe at 14. She joined the Singapore Youth Orchestra and in 1987 went for further studies at the University of Manchester and the Royal Northern College of Music (UK). She joined the SSO in 1992 and is now Associate Principal Cor Anglais cum Second Oboe. Her teachers include Robin Canter, Hugh McKenna and Peter Graeme. Elaine enjoys outdoor activities. Her leisure pursuits include running, swimming, scuba-diving and more recently, badminton.

Tang Xiao Ping began learning the clarinet at the age of nine. In 1983 he began studying at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, China. Two years later he won Third Prize in the Beijing Youth Clarinet Competition. 
After graduating with high grades, he was accepted into the Central Opera Theatre Symphony Orchestra as Principal Clarinet. In 1994 he was accepted into Boston University to pursue his Artist Diploma where he studied with Dr Ethan Sloane. The following year he was nominated as the most outstanding student in the University and earned a Dean's Scholarship. 
Alongside music, Xiao Ping’s other interests include photography and fishing.

Xiao Ping Tang (Tang Xiao Ping)

The Austrian bassoonist joined the Singapore Symphony Orchestra in 2008. He is a graduate of the Conservatory Vienna where he studied performance with Michael Werba (Principal Bassoon, Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra) and education. Various masterclasses complemented his education.
During his university years Christoph Wichert was able to gain experience in various ensembles of the Viennese concert life such as with the Wiener Kammerorchester. He is also a founding member of the Feuerhaus Kammerorchester. As a substitute player at the State Opera of Vienna and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, he was able to work, tour and record under conductors such as Zubin Mehta, Seiji Ozawa, Mariss Jansons, Riccardo Muti and Nikolaus Harnoncourt. He has performed as a soloist in various recitals and with orchestras playing concertos by Mozart, Weber, Pauer and Hartl.
Before moving to Singapore, Christoph Wichert was working as solo bassoonist with the Orchester der Vereinigten Bühnen in Wien for their productions and at the music school of Tulln teaching bassoon, music theory and guiding the symphonic wind band. In Tulln, he was able to successfully prepare some of his students for studies at music universities and started a composition workshop together with his colleague Cordula Bösze.
Being an active chamber musician with Ensemble QuinTonic, a devoted teacher and through his intense engagement in contemporary music, Christoph Wichert is always trying to widen his musical horizon.
