On June 2, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) was at the Shaw Foundation Symphony Stage to perform the closing concert of Singapore International Festival of Arts (Sifa).

The evening event drew almost 6,000 people to the Botanic Gardens. Audience members included students from school orchestras and choirs, who had previously attended SSO concerts at venues such as the Victoria Concert Hall. The outdoor concert gave them a different experience of an arts performance.

quote

[The concert] provides another perspective of how the arts could be positioned to connect with people [and] a unique opportunity for our children to be exposed and be connected to the community, giving them a shared experience via the arts.

Mr Nigel Phang Teck How, Vice-Principal, Dazhong Primary School in an interview with The Straits Times

The SSO performed versions of “Overture” (from musical West Side Story) and “Fried Rice Paradise” (from musical Beauty World) to a captivated audience. The orchestra was joined by leading vocalists Elena Wang, Julia Abueva, and Sean Ghazi, with hits from popular musicals and Disney classics such as “Part of Your World” (The Little Mermaid), “A Whole New World” (Aladdin), “I Have Dreamed” (The King and I), “For Good” (Wicked), and “Sun and Moon” (Miss Saigon). Audiences were also serenaded by classics such as Getaran Jiwa written by P. Ramlee, Beauty World and Bunga Sayang by Dick Lee.
