¡Ole! Expect sumptuous songs, Flamenco rhythms, wry humour and an orchestral swirl of colours unique to the French masters in this evening of music inspired by Spain. Ravel’s one-act comédie musicale The Spanish Hour will be semi-staged with Singaporean mezzo-soprano Jade Tan in the leading role, while baritone Bo Skovhus serenades his perfect lady in the enchanting songs of Don Quichotte à Dulcinée. This magical night conducted by Singapore Symphony Music Director Hans Graf also displays the orchestra in Ravel’s full sonic canvas, from the evocative Rapsodie espagnole to the electrifying, utterly unforgettable Boléro.

Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted. Brahms wrote his Requiem not to mourn the dead, but to give solace to the bereaved. Brahms himself lost a dear friend and mentor when Schumann died in 1856. The latter never heard his Cello Concerto performed. Their music comes to life in this soul-searching programme featuring Singapore-based Australian cellist Qin Li-Wei in Schumann’s Cello Concerto and the Singapore National Youth Orchestra playing side-by-side with the SSO. The Singapore Symphony Chorus and Youth Choir, Swedish soprano Susanna Andersson and Danish baritone Bo Skovhus lend their voices to Brahms’s Requiem.

Tchaikovsky holds nothing back in his tremendous Fifth Symphony, a towering work with its heart fully on its sleeve, nor in his turbulent overture encapsulating the passion and angst of Romeo and Juliet. “When the world was young it was covered in water. An endless sea that stretched farther than the sunset and the sunrise embraced the world. All living creatures lived in the sea and in the sky.” So begins the tale of The Crow and the Dove in this special programme. Not only will we be graced by a storyteller (doyen of the Singapore organ scene, Margaret Chen), we’ll also witness the ebb and flow of dancers on stage. Organist Phoon Yu accompanies a fusion of ballet and Filipino folk dance in this tale of fidelity adapted by Singapore Symphony Chorus Choral Director Eudenice Palaruan.
